Russian Orloffs

I have 5 Spangled Orloff eggs under my broody Calico Cochin hen. I will post pictures when they hatch, which should be 14 days from now. Can't wait!

Personally I agree on the tail angle being set much lower. I definitely like the English type a lot more than the American Bantam type. But with that being said, this isn't England. I don't know of a lot of people with Orloffs but I doubt many of them are bred for English type. The people who do have them likely breed them to the Bantam Standard.

There is a lot of time between now and their recognition, I wouldn't bank of them being accepted anytime soon. So a reworking of the tail angle is not out of question. But I think it would be best to leave the angle at 70 degrees. It can be accomplished easily. I would just try to steer clear of the Head/Tail bisect wording. That would make breeding a good Orloff a bit rough and would really take away from a judge's perspective on how the bird should look.

I would ask a Sumatra breeder who judges; how do spurs fit into the judging equation? There is a man who lives fairly close, Carl Fosbrink, who I respect highly. He had, in my opinion, the best birds in the country that have been and ever will be bred. He had Sumatras and bred them religiously.

I really want to see how that Mottled turns out Julio. Has anyone else gotten any Mottled birds from the parent stock before they were taken by the coyotes? If not maybe get into contact with Yellow House, they have some RC Mottled Anconas which may be a decent start for continued breeding.

Trying to keep up after a few days away. My RO did not hatch white nor have any here ever hatched white before. The spangling settles out in time but please note that mottling and spangling should be fairly even across the body with no solid white feathers in the body, black feathers with no mottling in the breast of the cockerels and only solid white -depending on which standards you use- in the primaries, and then only the first two on each wing if I am remembering correctly. I might not be. Tired from all this running around and now there's two cords of wood waiting to be tossed and stacked to boot.

edited to add how much I appreciate this standard's description of the RO head

So many references are to that predatory head. Please, people, don't lose it!

Daniel I'm not sure if anyone else got chicks or not. I had 9 eggs but this was the only viable one. I'll definitely keep an eye out on this one see how it turns out. I'm not too convinced on her (I believe it's a female, tail carried like a pullet already) yet, still a ways too go for that. Then again I don't have a clue what a mottled should look like. Ashandvine made a good point on mottling & spangling.

I wish I did. I am still trying to get all the terminology and what it means in my head. I can 'see' things in birds and understand some of the basics but after that I can't use biology terms. My shame is out there for all to see.
