Russian Orloffs

Thanks for the moral support. We are in the same boat.... now for some oars!
I just had a man contact me about some cockerels he wants to share. He is the latest breeder to join the New England area/RO fan club. I also heard from another breeder who heretofore I had not heard of and they might get on the show wagon.

I bought some orloff chicks and I was wondering if chick color means anything. Chances are these chicks will turn into poor-good quality but I am not 100% sure. I bought them from a lady who I was referred to, and she had a supplier. In other words I have no idea were they came from :/ I am not in it to breed them but I will need to sell a few when they are older so I would like to know a bit about the chicks. I have read a good amount of post on this thread but I am not even close to done.

I have 11 mostly blonde chicks and 12 chipmunk colored and a few with minimal chipmunk markings.

Most have beards but a few don't, they have yellow-e tan legs and are pretty quite.

Does chick color mean anything? Will the blonde be more white and the chipmunk be more brown?

Is there any automatic cull traits that chicks have? (I imagine if they are not born with a beard they will not develop one? Will the legs darken with age?)

Yes, cull all the beardless chicks now. It will make your life easier down the road.

Chick down coloration varies in Russian Orloffs. Your chicks have acceptable and normal colors. In our flock our bantams are yellow, but occasionally one hatches with a faint dot or brown stripe. The largefowl hatched in the chipmunk pattern. So far, we haven't noticed any color differences with the adults. But, it can never hurt to toe punch or band the chicks, and keep a close eye on their development. Keeping a log on color, type, and weight from a chick to adulthood will definitely help you cull out worthless chicks in the future.

Leg color does change with age. But, how tan are these legs? Ours hatch with a yellow/orange leg.

This image really sucks but it gives you a general idea. They are a bit more yellow than the pic shows and some have more pink-e yellow feet. None have white Sussex legs and none have duck feet.

It might be my computer, but that doesn't look bad. I would keep an eye on it. By the time they are feathered (8 weeks or so) their leg color will be revealed.

Has any one tryed the birds from privet? I got some ROs from them and they look great. I would get the ROs from them before any other hatchery in my opinion.

I personally will be getting some eggs or chicks from a private breeder in the spring. But the privet birds have been a great start!

You can show but they won't win anything more than BB as far as I know.
I had a singleton hatch. Nice yellow legs and dark color with great chipmunk stripes and hooked beak, wide nostrils. Of course it HAD to be a single and it HAS to not want to open its nice long toes. We had a few bator issues -power outtage and toddler turning it off- so it may be an incubation issue. I want more of these particular birds. Pics and this one chick seem great.

Roadrunner, nice bantams. I am not a bantam fan in general but there are a few exceptions. I HATE the high tail of a lot of bantams. Your ROB looks really nice in a few pics. I like that their type is still pretty upright. ps- you'll be hearing from me about those Chanties again come spring.
