Russian Orloffs

I believe, with regard to color pattern of the Spangled Orloff, the genes responsible are more like what we see in the mille fleur color pattern with the addition of the Mh (mahogany) gene. The Mh acts as a columbian like restricter of black. This would also involve the mo (mottled) gene and the Co (Columbian) gene to achieve the desired pattern of red/black/white. True spangled breeds involve both the Pg (pattern) gene and Ml (melanizer) but would lack the Co and mo genes. For this reason, I believe, the term spangled is a bit misleading in reference to the Orloff. I am not suggesting it be changed, simply stating that it is a bit of a nomenclature issue when trying to pin down the genes.

Well, all 4 have Duckfoot and crooked toes. The crooked toes I am OK with as it was likely do to moisture issues. The Duckfoot is greatly concerning. If 100%(of my wopping 4) have Duckfoot I am unsure I will breed much worth keeping out of the Mahogany.

I knew I was getting in deep with Orloffs: no Large Fowl Standard, Not recognized by APA yet, limited stock available. But I didn't have this in mind. I am unsure(with the amount of other birds I plan to breed) that I can really do much with these, at least on my own. I'd like to say I'll keep them, mix in Spangled and fix the problem. But I just don't see myself with those kinds of resources at the moment. If anyone wants a daunting project, I'd be willing to give them up in exchange for some established Spangled. As much as I like Solid Red and hate Spangled I'd be willing to get them to someone who could breed the Duckfoot out.

It's also looking like one doesn't have a beard.

Edit- for anyone who is interested, I plan to raise them until they are Adults. I am not yet NPIP, and these will not be tested for several months. So my plan is to keep until tested.

Wow!

What a giant disappointment!

Is there any chance that it could be disease related, instead of genetic? I know close to nothing about Mareks...it couldn't be something like that, could it?

For the record, I do the dry hatch method of incubation, only adding moisture at lockdown or if humidity drops below 25% (which very rarely happens). Lockdown humidity stays in the 60-70% range. I rarely have issues with toes. The Duckfoot is genetic. Sorry. That really does stink. Perhaps Erhard will have some ideas/insight.

Hello everyone, My name is Julio Rivera for those that don't know me. I have been e-mailing the APA in an effort to try to get the Russian Orloff accepted into APA Standard. I have had responses from the Chairman & President of the APA on what is necessary to do this. One of the requirements is to have 5 affidavits from 5 breeders that have bred for 5 years and can swear that have had reproduction that has been 50% true. I am requesting help from Orloff enthusiasts that are willing to make a collaborative effort to make the Orloff recognition into the APA happen as this is something that I can not do alone. It will not be an overnight thing as they also request that a certain number be shown as well as other requirements. I have e-mailed various breeders on this of which only Boris Koffler has responded back. One of the requirements is also a current standard for the breed which there is not one in place here in the USA yet. In the US Orloff Club of North America site (http://usorloffs.freeforums.net/) there is an APA SOP thread with the available standards (Germany, UK, Russian, ABA) in which enthusiasts can discuss a proposed Standard for admission into the APA SOP. A few good suggestions have been made already and I encourage you all to please visit the site and together we can come up with a solid Standard (or adopt one) that everyone will go by for the sake of preserving this breed, as well as having it accepted by the APA. I have posted both e-mails received in the US Orloff Club of North America site in the General Board thread.

Hi, wouldn't a good start for LF standard be to use the bantam standard except agree on LF weights? I got 6 orloff chicks from redrocketrooster, and 1 snuck in as a cockerel, which means I can start a breeding flock. Yea! They are from Meyer hatchery, anyone else have Meyer orloffs?
