Russian Orloffs

I'm planning to cross Saipan with Orloffs next year as a project breed. I'm wondering if anyone knows a resource on genetic traits and their dominance/recessive nature? I've read articles on colors but not on muffs and beards. I'm hoping to add the trait to the Saipan stature. I want to incorporate a good egg layer also (which i've heard is carried on the male gene) but have yet to decide on which to use.(i've also heard this depends on lineage) Any advice or experience on what orloffs in your flocks have produced with non-orloffs would be helpful as it might influence what I add to enhance my strain.

Very interested to hear how your project comes out. Will you be using a Saipan rooster or hen? or both? You want to make bearded and muffed Saipan?

Heres a link to some simple sites for traits that helped me understand some things.

I have a similar project I am just starting using Asils x Orloff to try and purge some of the recessives in my Orloff. I'll work it both ways with Orloff rooster over Asil hen and Asil rooster over Orloff hen. Its gonna take a while.

A bearded and muffed saipan? Crazy weird but would definitley make me think of little wise Chinese men! Saipans intrigue me because of their size. Thought about getting some just to start a good "no kidding? There's no way there can be a chicken like that!" chicken circle talk here locally;-)

Many pages back someone mentioned a space between the upper and lower beak. I don't remember exactly how it was written but was it that a small space is what you look for for better relation to a RO SOP? Is this what was mentioned or just a "defect"? This is a 4 week old male.

This is interesting to me and I would like to know more about your birds lineage. I have not seen this last in my birds and would like to know if it does with yours.

thanks gander! Ash- this is my 2nd year hatching ROs. This male is the first and only that has a beak like that. If it is a trait desired for quality then I'll be keeping him for sure! (And looking back at which roo was his pappy) I'll go back through the pages to see if I can find the post on it.

Cknldy congrats on your hatch so far. Desertmarcy & everyone else hatching good luck and hope there's a bunch of fluffys running around soon. Cknldy Russian stock Orloff are way different than what we, UK, & German stack have. One way to tell is they like a cleft between upper & lower beak. Kind of like a gap in between as in this cock (Russian Stock) who scored 96 points (Photo from www.fermer.ru) As Ash mentioned, we have been talking about importing eggs. We are talking of getting necessary documents in place to try to get eggs this year. This of course is dependent on finding a breeder in Europe who is DEFRA registered and willing to have their flock tested. The latter being a bit more challenging. As more information becomes available, we will post it on our group sites https://www.facebook.com/groups/uscaorloffs/ http://usorloffs.freeforums.net/ We will also make it available to those on this thread as not all have become members on the previous sites. If you are interested in being a part of this let me know so we can figure out how to include those interested. Importing is costly, but with enough people going in on it, the cost will be less per person. As for adopting an SOP, it is still in the works. If your interested in giving your opinion, you can do so on either of the previous links provided. Keep in mind that the facebook group is a closed group & joining is required, the freeforums is an open forum.
