Russian Orloffs

I do love the black/white patterns on the Orloff, or at least the idea of them on the Orloff. The breed has such a unique look, to then add the crisp contrast of color...
I have to agree, I think it's a great shame that the BMs haven't been more widely bred - I know that the bantam form is quite common amongst breeders over here, we for some reason the large aren't as popular and seem to be some what neglected.

Even over here, it seems like a lot of folks are moving towards bantam breeds. If you aren't interested in eating your birds or selling excess eggs, it makes sense, as you can keep more birds with fewer resources. Not really my thing, but I do understand the appeal.

RiddleMe I will wait anxiously to see the results :)

Clucksworth your Mottleds are fairly decent looking, I would like to see the results of your cock with the darker hen. You have seen what my F1 on the UK page looks like and it comes nothing close to yours. You're doing pretty good in my book.

Haha, thanks Julio. Although I think the only good thing about them is their colour, comb and legs. Other than that they need a complete makeover - their beaks especially need some work. I'm hoping by breeding my BMs back to one of Steve.Gs black males I will sort out a lot of features and keep the colour.

My Orloffs are laying! So are my son's bantam Cochins. Now... if I can get out to fix the division in the Spangled and Blacks/mottled pens I could see if the projects are laying. So glad to be in fresh eggs again. The oiled ones were great through the winter so far but we are nearly out of them now.

Butchered 9 RO cockerels on Thursday, 4 left but I ran out of energy (I also butchered some mix breed birds). I don't like the process of the actual kill, but must admit once that is done, I really appreciate the opportunity to see the structures and determine if what I think I'm feeling and what I actually see match up. And... They taste good to.

I hate it too but will admit that the meat is nice in the winter esp when I don't want to go out to the store. Pull one out of the freezer and voila! soup.

Sand hill has a good reputation and a great mission. All our Orloffs are needing some work so don't be surprised if they aren't perfect. IMO its worth supporting them.

The Sand Hill site says their Spangled Orloffs are sold out until 5/5/15.

If anyone knows where I could purchase some chicks from a breeder, please let me know. I'm also open to purchasing an adult trio or quad.
