I'm planning to cross my mahogany orloffs with Buckeyes and then back...hoping to add faster growth, even better attitude and better egg laying ability...

Ahhhh- good idea!

This is my favorite chick. I can't believe how early on the spangling is showing. I was expecting them to be like sussex and go through that partridge-like phase. The other chick I have that is the same age looks completely different.

How dominant is the spangling? Could you eventually get Mahogany Orloffs by selecting (in part) for the reds with the least spots with a Buckeye/Spangled Orloff cross? I've read that there was at one time a Buff Orloff developed, too, and the author suggested all it would take to recreate it was working with the Buff Chantclers. Can't seem to find that reference, now. (I read so much about the birds when I first got interested in them!)

I have some mahogany orloffs already--they are recessive and crop up in the spangleds...the spangling should come through when crossed with the buckeyes, although it will be weak...but crossing back to the orloffs should make them more spangled again...

My welsummers originated from a lady here on BYC. The Orloffs I have now, two I got from an auction and three from Ideal hatchery. They have the look, but aren't 100% there. A work in progress, if you will.

No Orloffs. Cry Cry Cry. Nature's Hatchery really let me down. I posted what happened under hatcheries... I won't bother anyone here with the details.

Does anyone have Russian Orloff chicks (pullets) for sale? I live in Alpharetta, GA so if you ship 1 day olds that would be awesome. If you are close (within 3 hours) I will come get them. I am afraid of doing eggs because I can't have Roosters in my neighborhood but if I can't find chicks, I would appreciate eggs too.

Thank you in advance,

DAWN

Oh Dawn...I'm so sorry. You poor dear.

If more of my girls were laying, I'd just send you some eggs to hatch.

I'm through hatching for the year, so I can't get any chicks to you even if I were getting eggs. Some of my girls are in the middle of horrible molts...so they're not laying at all. If you can't find any eggs or chicks and my girls get back into shape and start laying good again before it gets too cold, I'll get some eggs to you.
