Russian Orloffs

Pics
I'm located in southern Ohio next to West Virginia and Kentucky, and was wondering if anyone knows of any available good quality Russian Orloff hatching eggs or chicks this Spring?

Hi, and welcome to the orloff thread.

personally, I have been pleased with Star Bright Farm's quality and plan to get more from her this spring, you may want to get in touch to get on the waiting list. Rare Feather Farm is also a member here and has good quality. Tinstar Heritage Farm is a contact through the ALBC that looks to have good quality birds. Another source is Kummer Poultry. It can be tough to find orloff eggs, but keep looking and keep us posted on your progress. Most of what you will find will be spangled, but there are some mahogany and cuckoo out there.

I am participating in the Easter Hatch-A-Long and will hopefully have Spangled Russian Orloff to put in the incubator by then.

Would anyone be interested in joining us for the 3rd Annual Mahonri BYC Easter Hatch along? We will be setting eggs on March 17th. If you want to find out more about the cool contests and prizes or sign up to join, go here...

Cool! Be sure to keep us posted. I may be hatching some myself around that time. Do you know where you are getting the eggs? There seems to be a good amount of interest in orloffs. I hope it continues to grow. Good luck.

I'm on her list as well. She has nice birds. I already have a couple of hens from my last hatch of her eggs. She ships well, too. I imagine MFB will have good birds, also. If I remember right, he culled down from a large number representing a few different places to get good ones. I wasn't aware he was selling eggs. I'll have to check him out.

Here's a couple pics of my Orloff cockerel from IDEAL Poultry. They're not the best pics because he's in a chicken tractor and because of the lighting. He seems like a nicely-typed bird, but his spangling is nonexistent and, like most hatchery birds, he's smaller than an Orloff should be. Nice walnut comb, though.

God bless,

He looks handsome! :) I have some Russian Orloffs from Welp Hatchery and all of my hen have nice spangling, but I too have a rooster with next to no spangling, except for around this head! Lol!

Nice bird Gresh, have never seen your Orloffs. I will say, possibly the best typed Orloff I have seen in the US. Granted, I haven't seen many, but most I've seen carried themselves horizontally in the photos just about with high tails. To my understanding they should have a carriage as this bird, correct?

God bless,
Daniel.

A question for the Orloff breeders: I have heard that Orloffs are poor layers, but poor laying ability varies among opinion and strain (i.e. someone used to Leghorns will refer to a bird that lays 100-200 eggs a year as a poor layer, others may refer to it as average/decent) as well as certain lines may only lay a few while another may reach a production rate that is 10 times as much as the described line.

So the question is, how decent of egg layers are Orloff's? If possible, can you describe it in numbers?

Thanks and God bless,
Daniel.
