Russian Orloffs

Hey guys.... Anyone selling eggs on eBay right now from Iowa? I'm bidding on some and would love to know if they are anyone's from the thread...
I just had to "operate" on my RO hen's foot... She had bumble foot. I've never seen it or dealt with it up close and personal before, but I seem to have gotten it all and she is healing beautifully. She was such a trooper! She is now almost all grown in from her molt and her Spanglish is more beautiful than ever! I will post some new pics soon.
Make sure you keep the feet bandaged until all signs of scabs are gone..otherwise they can reinfect. I am almost done with a polish hen that I have been bandaging for three months or more.

I will try to get some foot pictures this week. By duck feet - do you mean webbed feet?

I did get some new pics of the cockerel yesterday.

I was educated about Duck Foot by another RO breeder as I have a girl with it. No, it is not webbing, as I first thought as well. Duck foot is where the fourth toe, the short one in the rear is not in the rear but forward-- even so far as up front with the other three. If you look at a duck's foot all their toes are up front and connected with webbing. If you minus the webbing you have duckfoot in chickens. Its not something you want, obviously. Once you learn to look for it its obvious.

As for the Cockerel, *I* like the look of him but I am not as veteran as some in here. See what the big boys think but this lil gal thinks he is shaping up nicely. Is that a Marloff in the back ground with the black beard and muffs??

In the background of the first pic are 2 of my EE's...in the second pic is one of my black ameraucanas. No one is laying yet, so they are all housed together. In the spring I am planning to separate them into breeding pens.

I do see what you mean about the duckfoot - is that something to cull for? Pink definitely has it - but she has the best personality by far. I could cull any of the others if needed but I'd want to keep her as a layer...

Brown seems okay??

I'll go through the rest to see if any others have it.

I am glad my cockerel is looking nice. When he was young he was super tall and gamey, so I was hopeful. He was the only cockerel that survived - I ordered 3, one died in shipping and the other of crossbeak.

Here he was as a chick - he always stood out from the rest!

And at maybe 8 weeks or so - he had lots of white, I hope some of it comes back!

I haven't been online much lately, but thought I'd post a few pictures of this years young birds for comparison. They are just coming out of the molt, so the beards and such are just now filling out again. I've been breeding for a darker, more spangled bird and it's slowly getting there. You can see a marked difference in these and in last years birds. There are some of both in the pictures.

Sorry for the crappy camera, it's all I've got and it's old like me. The color is blurred as always, but maybe you can get an idea of what they look like. Of course they wouldn't hold still or pose for anything.

Lookin good Terry.
Ash, you've got me going over all my birds feet now. LOL.
Kaluha, your pullets seem to have a VERY heavy Mahogany influence. I'd really like to see how they progress.
Found this little link, thought you folks might enjoy it. The color seems very odd to me. It is in Russian.

I'm gonna try to post updated pics this weekend.
Take care

I will keep posting pictures as they mature :) When they were younger, they had more spangling. Now they are going through a phase with very little - but they are starting to get more spangling again, they seem to be starting on the head and vent areas. "Orange" has always had very little spangling but I like her a lot otherwise.
Next year I'll look into getting some birds from private breeders, but for now I think the quality is decent for hatchery birds. Half were obvious culls but the rest I like so far. But I am new to breeding chickens so that's why I'm here looking for input :)

Been missing ya MFB! Yes, the darker color is much better for sure! I would like to recommend that you consider cleaning the lense on the camera. I looked at it and either the leans is scratched, cracked for dirty. The smudges are all in the same area. Cracked would account for condensation in there but I think its one of the other two issues. I might have a beater here you could use. Let me look.

Don't blame me, blame Mr Casper. He taught me about it.
Now, this site you found is GREAT for type. The color is light, even for EU standards, but the type on those hens, that is the best I have seen yet!! I have already exported a few images for private reference so I can look back here. And did you see that white cockerel?? A solid white Orloff-- I wish I could find the blacks. There is supposed to be a man in Russia with blacks but... you know know that goes.
I lost the cockerel I got from Mr Casper. I had been fighting to put weight back on him after discovering how emaciated he was. He and the two hens from that hatch are all pretty scrawny. Well, he just laid down and died yesterday morning. I think that the cold had him burning too many calories. The only good news is that I do have an adult coming free o charge and his blood is different from the others so I should have some good diversity to work with here. I will only have the one rooster but I have seen him and like him a lot.
I'm waiting on those pics NC
