Any problems in using it? I was planning on just wire brushing it. Is there anything else that can be done?

How funny! I just posted a similar thread a few down from yours. Is yours rusty like with red rust or the white powder?

rust particles is not good for chickens health
you can use it but beware the chickens will not be as healthy
I always used 1 gallon plastic waterers with screw on tops
then turn over and the chickens drink out of the top

I did this as chickens need their water dumped and clean water every 8 hrs
as water makes up 85% of the chickens eggs you need fresh clean healthy water for them
email any questions

I considered using a plastic waterer but is there a water heater or a technique prevent a plastic waterer from freezing in the winter?

yes I used water heaters under my plastic waterers
I bought them from

Glenda L Heywood, I wasn't sure you could use a water heater with plastic waterer, Thanks!

You can also build yourself a waterer heater for less than $10. I also own two of the store bought ones and I use the black rubber buckets over them in the winter.

Umm, I'm fairly new to chickens and haven't yet done a winter with them. Is the water heated high enough to melt the plastic waterer? I would think, just a temp, over 32-34 degrees. Or maybe the concern is the heating element? UGH! Am I thinking correctly? It's still early and coffee is going down slowly. I'm doing a search.....

used them for decades
you only use 25 watt bulbs mostly and then in December and January we used 40 watt bulbs
they are made for heat
ask when you buy them as some may not be for heaters
