Hi,
This is my second winter with five chickens that are 1 1/2 years old. How do I keep the galvanized water bucket from turning rusty and slimy? One chicken likes to sit on top of it and poop into the water trough. I have a heater on the water bucket for winter which is nice, but is there a plastic version I can use that won't melt with the heater? I hate to see them have to drink yucky water.

G’Day from down under granny1258 :frow Welcome!

Sorry, as we do not do 'winter' and in summer, the water comes straight from the tap heated :p I am not really able to help you out but I do agree that some sort of cover is probably a good first step.

I really just wanted to say that I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
