Rusty, slimy water container

Hi,
This is my second winter with five chickens that are 1 1/2 years old. How do I keep the galvanized water bucket from turning rusty and slimy? One chicken likes to sit on top of it and poop into the water trough. I have a heater on the water bucket for winter which is nice, but is there a plastic version I can use that won't melt with the heater? I hate to see them have to drink yucky water.

Maybe you could fashion some sort of pointed cover for your waterer to keep the chickens from sitting on it?

Once it gets rusty, you might as well replace it. I use a heated dog bowl, up on blocks, it stays clean.

Sorry, as we do not do 'winter' and in summer, the water comes straight from the tap heated I am not really able to help you out but I do agree that some sort of cover is probably a good first step.

I really just wanted to say that I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
