Well, this is just frustrating. I made an order of 25 chicks to MM a week ago. Unfortunately, the people that work @ my post office must have some sort of mental block, and don't understand what "calling on arrival" means. My *dead* chicks were delivered to my door when it was 30 degrees in Alabama. Great! So I get a replacement order. I specifically called the POSTMASTER of the office, gave him my name, number, details, etc. and told him to call me when they arrive (no matter what time). He said he would call me at 3:00 a.m. monday (today). So, I called @ 3:00 a.m., just to be sure, and he told me "no go..no chicks today". So I assume they will be delivered tomorrow. Today, around 10:00a.m., I get a honk in my driveway, and my postal service carrier is standing outside w/ my baby chicks (that were supposedly not there). I was so livid. I heard peeping, and was hopeful. 6 of them were smooshed at the bottom of the small box. About 10 of them were on their way out. So far, only 2 banties have died, but my New Hampshire red is looking very bad. The banties are looking seriously sad, and my Araucauna/leghorns/orphington are the only ones doing good.

I am so sad. I guess I'll just buy from the local feed store.

Anyone know what the policy is w/ Mcmurray and a 2nd dead order?

Thanks for listening to me gripe about it. I am just SO disappointed. =[

I called and complained to the post office again, but I think everyone up there just doesn't care. It truly is frustrating.

i'm so sorry! Those poor baby chicks. i'm not sure about MM's policies as i've never ordered chicks from them. But sure sounds like buying local is the best route.

Again, i'm so sorry.

Sounds like ur post office is run by incompetent buffoons! Sorry for the loss. Makes me appreciate my Post Master all the more, as long as I let him know a week ahead of time that they are coming things go smooth as silk. Heck they even leave my live plant orders inside my house for me so the dog wont shred them. I love living in a teeny farm community sometimes

man, im sorry, thats awful. just call and demand your money back. then try ordering from a different hatchery,
it sounds like the post ofice isnt listening to you, but, since they did actually arrive on time, and still had a massive death rate, i think this is a mcmurry thing.....yes i know some people will hate me for defaming the sacred name of mcmurry, but i just do not like them over at mcmurry.
i can only speak from my experience. but get all your money back...dont give up untill you do. and buy from somewhere else.

amynbobby, sorry to hear about your sad experience with the PO.

How can ppl be so thoughtless with those little babies. I have heard a lot of griping this year about bad delivery experiences.

I have to say I ordered last year from our local TSC and all 25 came well and hardy. We didn't loose one chick. I have not ordered from McMurray as yet. I would call them and let them know about the delivery. Perhaps they will credit you for your loss. Not that that will help relieve your sadness on loosing chicks. So heartbreaking!

Hey if you need to gripe , this is the place for "venting" . Take care and good luck with finding some new babies.

Don't just blame the PO my PO called as soon as my MM order arrived..didn't help 13 out of 26 dead. Check your hatch date mine were 4 days old when they got to me.They mail them on Saturday's Mine had a hatch date of Friday and I got them on Monday a day after a severe ice and snow storm.
MM will tell you to call back on Wed with the death toll if you call sooner. They will replace or reship-mine are shipping again in March but I have to pay the shipping since I opted to not get 12 roosters free and re-ordered another 25 this time with extras of the ones I actually ordered from them for so if most die I will still have a few--all died the first time and only the order fillers I ordered lived

If I get too many dead ones the second time I'll just get a refund and will be the last MM order I place.

3 more just perished, but I understand that's the risk you take with mail order chicks. McMurray said they would gladly send out another order to another post office, or refund my $$. So that's good. The only thing that burns me really bad is the fact that when I called the PO to complain, they hung up on me! Just *click* right in my face. BOOOOOO. I think I'm gonna just take the local route. I never knew you could order from TSC, b/c I have one right down the street. Do they offer a good listing of breeds? Thanks again for all the replies! Makes me feel a lot better.

Go up the ladder above your local PO, they keep raising rates and offering less, it is time to make them do their job.

Happy to say that the rest of the flock are eating and drinking and peeping away. I got scared at first, watching them eat then..*plop* face first in the food and they were sleeping. O.O Did not know that was possible. I had to gently poke her to see if she was ok, then ZIP! she ran off. I can breathe easy now. I agree. I will call the USPS and complain directly. Thanks again for the comments!

I must say..that the Araucauna is by far the most luxurious feeling chick in the bunch. She even has little ear tufts. Gosh, I'm in love with these little peepers. Of course, I love my old, broody hens too. =P
