I read them before I posted. I know where you stand on the issue, but why then did you make this thread?

Because she was feeling shocked and being honest about it. And she trusted us to talk to her about it.

Chickenlover1991 I am a person who frequents all areas of the forum including the meaties section. I don't raise Cornish X birds because I did not like the fact that a lot tend to die before you even get to processing date.

To give a bit of perspective for those on the Meaties forum. I raise and love all my chickens from the time they hatch. I hatch out my own eggs and take care of all my girls and boys respectively. They all have my love, get treats and are given the best of everything. The problem is that I can't keep 100's of chickens since I only have 2 acres of land. I have 34 chickens right now. Some are for eggs and some are boys. Up here I have two options when I breed eggs. I have to either put them on Craigslist and try to sell them to someone who might not treat them with respect and will probably still process them. Or I can bite the bullet and process them myself. I choose to do the latter because I feel it's my responsibility to make sure that every aspect of my chickens lives is the best it can be from life until death. I can't do that if others are involved unfortunately and a lot of people out there view chickens as just chickens not as living beings. After seeing videos on how animals are treated in commercial processing places I also decided that I would no longer buy any of my meat from the local grocery stores. I grow and raise my own pigs, goats, sheep, chickens and soon will have turkeys and ducks as well. I also buy beef from a local grower rather than from the store. It's my responsibility to make a change if I see something I don't like in the world.

I can understand why the pictures on the meaties forum might be shocking and I apologize for that. Make sure if you go on the forum that you watch the titles. Most people will put graphic pictures in the title line if there is something that might be upsetting to see. While the pictures are graphic they are also extremely educational as well and help others just starting out so they can be as respectful as possible when they must process their chickens. I would like to applaud you for approaching an issue that is tough in such a mature manner though kudos to you.

i know. i'd never butcher my chickens. I promised my mom that if we get chickens, i'll still eat chicken (it's really the only kind of meat i like) but i'd never bring myself to eat my OWN chickens.....

my 2 cents --

I ate chicken because it's like a staple food item. You don't think about where it comes from.
Then when you do see where it comes from... it's really sad and sickening.

The past few years I've been transferring to a vegetarian diet.. because it is depressing what the creatures go through.

I personally could never do it, butcher one of my chickens. But I support those who do because I know that the chickens were raised humanely, treated humanely, and died humanely.

I'm not a vegetarian because "eating animals is cruel" but because they get treated so horrible in the industry.

I'd be inclined to eat a chicken that someone raised and killed themselves, knowing it was humane and the chicken was well taken care of. (Same with all other food animals)

That's exactly what i do. we get chickens from a person we know, and she treats them humanely, and kills them humanely, ect. I refuse to eat store bought chicken, for the same reason as you.
