Sad day for me... Unsuccessful shipping...

pips&peeps :

There should be no reason for the birds to die in that short of time period unless there were too many in the box. I just shipped sebastopol geese to Florida yesterday and they made it fine. Of course I shipped two in a swan box and another in an omni box.

The boxes keep the heat in, so it is important not to over fill. How old were the silkies?

They are all at least a few months old. Old enough to sex.

Shayna, I am so sorry. I, too , have received a dead bird before and it's heartbreaking. I would say it is the exception, rather than the rule.

I would be happy to send you some waterers that I designed to put inside the shipping boxes that will not leak into the box. For 2 young birds I would add two to the box. For more put 4 of them in....just to be sure.

They are completely reusable. You can ship the waterers to the person who ships your birds and ask them to add them. I'll send instructions on how to attach them inside the box.

@ Three Cedars Silkies - Sent you a PM. That's a wonderful idea, I never knew such a thing existed.

These silkies are pretty good sized, 4-6 months old I'd guess, and having 3 of them put in a 10"x12" box when it was warm was probably just too much. It's so sad to lose them. I'm glad to know this is rare, and I hope to never deal with it again if I should decide to order more birds. The seller did respond and offered to send me a replacement when the weather cools off. I thought that was very fair and am so happy to hear that.

The others that arrived today are still doing great! They've eaten a ton and are quite talkative and active. Here is a picture of them in quarantine

I fear this so much that I drove 12 hours to below Miami from North Florida to get my shamo. I did see where you can ship birds through Delta airlines. This I would do. They take them to the airport and put them on the plane. They fly to a major airport near you and you pick them up. It is like they ship dogs. Costs more but to me it would be worth it if you have a seller willing to do that. I am sorry this happened.
