Uhhh....he's a rooster. He's just following his instincts, and I think the hens expect it. I'm sorry, but I can't understand why people are so afraid of roosters being aggressive. We have nine, and NONE are aggressive. They are all different breeds, or some are mixed breeds. All are friendly and easy to handle. They also get along with each other, for the most part. As far as being aggressive with the hens, well...that's for them to figure out. After all, chickens have been doing the same thing for like, forever. When I was growing up we had two white leghorn roosters. They weren't aggressive all the time, but once in a while, they'd decide to run at someone and spur them. We as kids thought it was hilarious. It really didn't hurt, it was sort of like being hit by a basketball with burrs glued on. We learned to hold a foot out so they'd run into a foot, instead of our leg. Since we have had chickens here we only had one aggressive rooster, and we would just pick a broom up and twirl a broom around our legs when we were around him, after a few minutes, it would discourage him. His life came to an end one evening when he challenged a skunk. (the skunk ate him) Relax. Your rooster will be fine. If you can't stand to see the sight of him mating, you probably shouldn't have one at all, but it's just a natural thing. Our kids have seen it lots of times and they aren't damaged in any way.
