sad day today

Oh Dear! I'm so sorry

probably the heat. I got 7 goslings and 8 ducklings all in 1 box from Ideal and had no losses. All were very alert, active and hungry upon arrival. I think they will replace them. The last chicks I got from an individual in mid May express shipping took 3 days to receive. I thought Express was next day. I also thought Air Port wouldn't allow shipping of live animals if temp was over 85 degrees on either end of the trip

First off I want to thank you for all your support and kindness. Before I read the posts I ran out and got a little stuffed duck (no chickens) and a mirror to put in with her. Good idea I guess from what I read. She seems a little calmer. I will says shes a fighter she is eating and drinking good. No I dont have a broody hen as my oldest girls are only 20 weeks. I have some 3 week olds but they are roos and I figure they are too old to be in with her. I am going to list looking for a chick or 2 on craigslist and post to try to get rid of some of my roos. Ive had really bad luck getting girls that why I sent for some. Ideal did say they would replace them but with the heat I am afraid it will happen again. I dont blame them I blame the postal system. The man at the post office told me they were transported to our post office in a truck that was not air conditioned. I am going to call the post office tomorrow and ask where they came from by truck and see if I can go there to pick them up. Im thinking Springfield. and I live in Decatur which is about 40 miles away. I would gladly make the trip to save my chickies lives.

I'm so sorry.

I've used Ideal before, and they are very fair. They will be sending you some more chicks, won't they? Like everyone else has said, it probably was the heat, so maybe waiting to get some more at a later date?

Best of luck.

Thank you for doing some good PI work to find out what happened.

Post offices transporting live beings without AC in the boiling temps this country has been seeing - - - -unless I'm missing something the hatcheries should not ship at such times. I can't help but imagine how horrible it must feel to die of extreme heat.

And worse, before your life has even had a chance to begin.

It shouldn't be this way but if hatcheries are not going to care to make the correct judgement call it leaves it up to the rest of us to do all the detective work - post office trucks not all having AC (do any?) & temps anywhere along the route too high = halt shipment. Likewise when it's too cold out and the trucks aren't heated. These heartbreaking situations are all over BYC everytime there is extreme weather.

Does anyone know what else I can do to make my remaining ones life a little easier til I can find her some companions? She seems so lonley. Last night I checked on her before going to bed to make sure brooder was the right temp, and she was lying next to the mirror I put in there looking at herself. So incredible sad made me want to cry or bring her into bed with me.
