sad day today

Oh, that's so pitiful! I read on a different lonely chick thread that sometimes they like to hide under a feather duster; it sorta looks like "Mom" to them, I guess. I'm also wondering whether she'd appreciate hearing some chick sounds during the day. Anyone ever try playing some peeping from YouTube or something? There's a cute thread somewhere on here about a chick taking a dust bath on a towel, and I think there's lots of peeping in the background of that video. Your poor baby!

I had the same experience the first time I ordered from Ideal. I know they are a Texas based hatchery, which is why I chose them. I figured, being in the same state would cut down on the amount of travel time the chicks spent in their box. When I picked them up...all DOA or dying. (This was early June.) 1 out of my order made it. It was really sad. I called the hatchery and they made every effort to fix the problem. I had a hard time deciding if I should do it again. I decided to give it another shot and let them send me a replacement order. Luckily, every chick made it!

The only thing we could come up with was that, during shipping, the box was not level. This caused all the babies to slide to one end and pile up. I'm not sure how common this is, but it only takes one careless driver/loader, etc. and the whole box is at risk.

I poured through online chick ads and found a farm a couple of hours away who had chicks hatched the same day as our little miracle baby. It was royal pain in the butt, but worth it in the end to get some nursery mates. I thought about keeping everyone separated (normal if bringing in new chickens) but figured she was spending so much energy crying, she'd die from that if I didn't do something. Luckily no diseases were spread, and she made a special friend right off the bat. They are still very close and snuggle next to each other each night!

Good luck, and I'm so sorry...

Thats what I am trying to do right now, but so far no luck. Ideal said they could send me replacements but we are going to have 90 temps for at least the next week so I am afraid that would happen again. Anyone in Illinois have day old for sale? Im willing to travel At this point will pay whatever and dont care what kind.

Over the last couple of days buffy's been getting weaker put electrolytes in water and last night even got to point of force feeding and watering, but this morning she passed away. I think she was just too weak from the ordeal that took all her chickmates lives. I even went out and found some new chicks to keep her company thinking that was what was making her act the way she was. Now I realize that no matter what I did she was not going to make it. The stress she went through was just too much for her little body to bounce back from. Thank you all for your support through this, you all are a great bunch of people here.

Me too, Bond County. Where are you? Wish I had some chicks to give you for that sweet baby. Was it the heat you think that killed the others? It was brutal last week, going to be the same this week.

Im sure it was the heat.. and thank you for the offer but I had found her some new chickmates, Brought 5 new home last night so at least she wasnt alone when she went

I'm so sorry about your chick. Don't beat yourself up over it... you're right that there wasn't anything you could do. You gave that little one a great life and now you have the new babies to keep you busy

Enjoy the new ones!

So sad

And so wrong. So sorry.
I am wondering what Ideal's response would be to a question as to why they shipped with such tremendous heat on the route if indeed that is what they did. While they said they would 'replace' them that can never begin to mitigate for beautiful bright new lives made to suffer and die.
Thank you for getting the new chicks locally.
