Sad Day!!! UPDATE ****PICS OF NEW ROOSTER**** BEWARE OF SNAKES!!

I am soory to hear about your roo - I know that pain all to well, about a week ago I lost one of my 8 week old girls to a skunk, It took my littlest chicken and the sweetest one,we to feel bad about getting another one but I only have 2 chickens left and I would feel safer getting a few more, I did not want a roo but after reading what your roo did for his girls I have talked my hubby into getting one. I only hope he is half the roo yours was.
I am very sorry for you and your family

So sorry to hear about Sgt. Major Bok Bok. I would have killed the snake, and it wouldn't have made me feel bad at all. He will probably be back, unless where you took him is a long ways off.
I sure wouldn't put 2 adult roosters in with 5 week old pullets. That is not nearly even half grown. The roosters will be trying to breed them long before they are mature enough for that. Two roosters can get pretty randy. Good Luck.

oh I am so sorry to hear that ...........I had found a black snake in my chicken coop last week,I beat it senseless........it slowly wiggled away.retarded I hope....my eggs were gone............ no harm to any chickens or roos.cause they refuse to use the coop...................that is good for that reason only.........but I had been curious when a huge sitting hen went.so sign of struggle.no feathers...........she was sitting and it was like she got beamed up ........not a sign......and something killed my 2 babies....one torn apart......the other just gone like the sittin hen.............could a black snake do all that?or is there something else lurking out here I have yet to find.??? Us chicken lovers sure put up with a lot of loss don't we, but it's so worth it...............

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss! I used to get such a tickle out of seeing his name appear in posts.

Don't feel bad about wanting to get another roo. You aren't 'replacing' him, but honouring his memory by making sure the girls he died trying to protect remain safe.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sgt. Major Bok Bok. Here are the words to Tap's and the story behind it in rememberance of one brave roo.

Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.

Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep.
May the soldier
or sailor,
God keep.
On the land
or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

Love, good night,
Must thou go,
When the day,
And the night
Need thee so?
All is well.
Speedeth all
To their rest.

Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day,
And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
'Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.

Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison's Landing in Virginia . The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land.

During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment.

When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead.

The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.

The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.

The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral.

The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate.

But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician.

The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth's uniform.

This wish was granted.

The haunting melody, we now know as "Taps" used at military funerals was born.

He will probably be back, unless where you took him is a long ways off.

I forgot to specify that Tar River is about 15 plus miles away from me.

I had been curious when a huge sitting hen went.so sign of struggle.no feathers...........she was sitting and it was like she got beamed up ........not a sign......and something killed my 2 babies....one torn apart......the other just gone like the sittin hen.............could a black snake do all that?or is there something else lurking out here I have yet to find.???

Black snakes sufficate (spelling?) their pray then swallow it whole. If a black snake took your full grown hen that would have to be one GIANT snake. I wouldn't rule out a black snake on a young one (of course since it happened to me) but not on the one that was torn apart.

I have a new found hatred for snakes now. Black snakes are the worst to. When I was about 13 years old a 6-8 foot black snake chased me and now at 24 years old they still freak me out. My sister had 2 ball pythons and I was fine with them, I held them and let them on my shoulders but F*** a black snake!!!
