Sad Hen with one eye closed and liquid coming out of it

This morning I went to feed my hens I saw that one of them was really sad. She had one eye closed and stretching her neck to gasp for air, I thought she was yawning, but she was doing it repetitively. She is puffed up and her tail down. When I came back, she stopped gasping for air, I stood there for 5 min to see if she would start gasping again but she didn't. She also opened a bit of her eye for like 2 seconds. She was perfectly fine yesterday, I don't know what happened. What do I do?

I checked on her again and she seems to be a little less sad. I noticed the she is extremely docile. When I was checking on her, she didn't try to resist me like normal. She is now breathing normally. Her crop is very squishy, so I don't think she is really eating. But when I took her out, she was digging and pecking like normal. I noticed liquid coming out of her eye. Could it be an infection? She doesn't have anything coming out of her mouth or nose.

If this were my hen - and an avian vet was not an option - I'd isolate her and take a look at what's going on in her eye. If you rinse her eye with saline, you may be open it gently and see what's going on (is it red, inflamed, cloudy, etc.?). It's probably very uncomfortable for her, so I would begin treating it as soon as possible. For eye infections, an ophthalmic ointment like Terramycin can be helpful. Offering a vitamin and electrolyte supplement in her water may also help facilitate her recovery.

Best of luck!

Than you so much for the response! Sorry for not responding sooner. I've been trying to get some saline and terramycin for her. She is able to open her eye half way now. Her skin around her eye is swollen, and her the inside of her bottom eye lid seems to be reddish. She isn't so docile anymore and she is eating again.

I'm so sorry. Stay the course, and hopefully she improves. I had a hen with a bad pecking injury to her eye that healed completely once the bird had a chance to rest and not have it continue to be pecked at. Hopefully it resolves quickly for you.
