Sad Hens

I have read in a couple of books, Holderead's being one, that you need to slaughter poultry out of sight and better yet out of hearing of the other birds.

Well, lessons learned I suppose. Let's hope they don't hold a grudge for too long! I'm looking forward to eggs!

This seems off topic, but stay with me here...
We lost a mare about a month and a half ago. She and her two full daughters were always turned out together. Penny, the mare we lost, had a twisted gut, was rolling around, thrashed out of the 4 rail pipe corral, and she ran and ran and ran. Long story short, the vet had to put her down where she was found. Not near her daughters. Not even near our property. (this all happend while we weren't home)
Roulette and Rickey, her two girls, seemed so depressed for days on end.

I was telling a friend of ours, silly as it may sound, that they seemed depressed and she asked " were they were able to sniff their mothers dead body..." Feeling a bit funny at this point I said no... She told me "they understand dead, not gone." (Then it all made perfect sense.) "But they'll get over it with time..." and they did. All your hens know is that they're gone. I guess it's a bit different if they were able to hear what was going on or even see it though. I'm sure you'll get your eggs sooner or later. Maybe give them extra treats

As much as I love my chickens I have to say they are lined up at the fence each year when we butcher the meat birds. No tears or worried on their faces they want any tidbits we might leave. Yeah they clean up anything we leave and we try to get everything. I think they are just adjusting to peace and quiet.

Don't worry, they don't hate you. Things will get back to normal
