Sad momma duck

I have a duck who just hatched her first eggs . It was an odd size and I dont understand why . But she hatched 2 babies and they only survived for a day . The next day we found momma laying on one of the babies and she refuses to leave its side and trying to wake it up . I don't know what I should do this is so heartbreaking .

take the dead duckling away from her and dispose of it she will be looking for them for a day or two but will snap out of it and go back to normal.

Take the dead one away and leave her be. Animals actually get over the deaths of their babies surprisingly quickly. It might be sad but she'll be back to normally after a couple of days

Okay . I just have to figure out how to get to it because she is so aggressive about her babies ! Any reason why the clutch was so small ? It's her first time .

if she just started laying they could have been smaller eggs than what normal layers lay

Did any survive?.... Sorry that happened.......Try bringing her a special treat and carry a broom to herd her from the dead Ducklings....Quickly pick them up....

No none survived she lost both of them . They were fine the first day I saw them and then the next morning they were gone .

Her first time and they possibly got cold or she killed them ?.....Sometimes first time Hens will kill them before her hormones switch from setting to protecting....Next time she will understand better......Sad......
