Eunice Siversten (Owner Duck Haven FL.) A long time Margate Resident, Founder of “Duck Haven” a non-profit over 50 years ago, died in hospital today following a heart attack.

Eunice was devoted to caring for abandoned and injured muscovy ducks.

She will be greatly missed -- particularly by the muscovy

That is so sad Ruth will someone carry on her work?

I don't know yet. Her husband is elderly, but he was helping latterly. There is also a devoted volunteer. If I hear anything, I will update here.

The main problem is that Eunice was not at all good at fund raising, and depended on folks dropping off duck food and supplies. When she was running out, she would put an appeal on Facebook. I have sent her an order of duck pellets delivered from Tractor Supply. I know she also used scratch grains, but that might have been because they were cheaper than duck pellets. She rarely sent more than 1 liner responses to inquiries!!! [She was in her high 80s and my own mother in her early 90s only used 1 liners!!!]

I think that they are closing down and no one will continue her work. THe granddaughter has said htat they are not deciding on the individual ducks' futures until they have got over the immediate actions needed for Eunice's funeral and affairs.

The family has had numerous offers to take ducks/ducklings and granddaughter said they are pairing off ducks and offers but contacting any one yet. Waddle on Inn rescue has offered to take the ducks although they in Georgia, are a long way from Miami

I beleive that they will rehome all the ducks

I’m not a duck keeper, but have heard great things about Waddle on Inn (I’m in Atlanta).

It's a relatively big professional rescue with dedicated founders/directors, staff and volunteer duck foster patents. All non-injured waterfowl go to foster parents who do not have other waterfowl nor pets.

They do not take sick birds. This is because of infection risk. They just had two "healthy" birds that had just complete 28 days quarantine with a foster home, that died suddenly on day 30 (I think). They had necroscopies and they died from Avian 'flu. That reinforces their policy to send all non-injured birds directly to foster homes. If they had spent even one minute at Waddle on Inn, their whole flock would have been euthanized.

I have learnt from this and I am maintaining my own policy of keeping all rescues quarantined for at least 28 days. I may extend that to 35 days now, as Waddle on Inn has done
