Sad Update on Haley :( 3 wk old chick sneezing turned worse

The vitamins in the Polyvisol ENFAMIL formulation are the ones that are usually the ones that cause the most immediate and drastic symptoms when deficiency (whatever the underlying condition) occurs.
I'm just wondering too, if she isn't getting her nutrients, will her body finally start accepting nutrients later? Or, could this become something permanent? It'd be worth it to continue making sure she survives to do this her entire life, but still, I'm curious if her body will finally start absorbing what she needs to get the weight on her that she's lacking.

One of my original birds had a malabsorption problem (I suspect a rheo virus but who knows for sure what was causing the malabsorption) ...he didnt even get his comb and such till almost seven months! Took me forever to figure out how to treat him (and basically he got over it "himself" >but I had to supply a general nutritional supplement plus a couple other things for almost a half year before he snapped out of it) >>> so yes, they CAN "get over it" but you may need to supplement and keep a good eye on them for the coming half year.

ETA: He turned out to be an awesome roo and produced some wonderful chicks who were all very healthy.... now not saying this is always the case, but it CAN be a happy ending.

Hmm, that could be what's happening with Haley as well. She doesn't seem to be getting her feathers as quick as her sister either, so now I get why.

Thanks for the great description and information. I really appreciate that. And I'm so glad to hear that your roo turned out well. I guess only time will tell with her then

It can? Yikes. Yeh, I would think so. Thanks

I think I'm going to stick with the Poly-vi-sol and see what happens then. Luckily, I haven't started with the sugar water so that's good.

Our chick Fatima was always runty and had the strange poops you described. She obviously didn't digest her food properly. This is what worked for us:

1) Switched feed, thinking ours may be old
2) Cocci-medicated feed
3) Chick vitamins in water
4) Poly-Vi-Sol (or however you spell it)

We think it may have been cocci (because another chick was diagnosed with it later), but we're not sure. Anyway, now she's starting to catch up with the other chicks growth-wise and her poops are back to normal!

Hope this helps! Keep us updated! Good Luck!

Thanks so much. I appreciate that.

I have a question though. My brother made a mistake and bought the TRI-vi-sol with Iron, instead of the POLY-vi-sol and I was curious as to what the difference in the two are, well, besides the Tri-vi-sol he bought has the iron? I'm not going to give her the Tri-vi-sol, but I was just curious as to what the differences are between the Tri versus Poly?

Thank you.

Okay, here's an update on Haley. So far, last night I administered the first dosage of Poly-vi-sol and needless to say I got more on my hand and on her chest to begin with then a drop anywhere near her mouth. Have I mentioned she's still a fighter?

Now my room smells like baby vitamins. But, I got a drop into her beak and she swallowed it down, then she opened her beak as if to say, 'Oh my god this tastes awful!' hehe

This morning she seems to have a little more energy than I've seen. Without me waking her up, she gets up and walks around with the others (though she's been doing that, it's more now that she does) and seems to eat a little more.

I ordered the Avia Charge 2000 last night, didn't rush it since I've got to do the Poly for the same time anyway that it will take to get shipped.

So, she's had (just now) her second dose of the day and as before, she gives me the icky face when she gets the drop in her beak, then goes to pout in the corner for a little bit. Seriously, she will turn away from me and not want look at me for a moment.

So cute! But does she act like a good girl and willingly drink it? Uh no

She clamps her beak shut so I've learned to place the dropper lightly against the side of her beak (very gentle)and when she protests and opens her beak a little at something being placed there I can get the drop in. So

hopefully this is a small progress to a very happy ending, but right now I'm not getting my hopes up too much yet, but happy that she's showing progress.

A question though. What causes the liquid poopies? And I'm talking, basically it looks like water, and is loose like water. Is it because she hasn't been absorbing the food properly and nutrients? Because she hasn't been eating much? And, is it bad for the others to drink at it? I try really hard to get them not to, but I don't know, maybe they think it is water or something and go crazy for it as soon as she goes. So I'm concerned about that. I hope they can't get sick from it, or can they?

And, what can I give her, if anything, besides the yogurt for the digestion? My brother (he tried so hard though so I didn't have the heart to tell him that he got the wrong yogurt after making him have to exchange the Tri-vi-sol for the correct Poly-vi-sol last night) got me a fruit yogurt, instead of the plain. Or, could I still use that? Would that be better than nothing? Or, is the plain yogurt the only [best] option?

Iron is not good for chickens, they have some problems with it in vitamins, just can't remember what.

I gave my chicks fruit yogurt the first time, cuz I didn't have any plain. They'll probably need grit to help with the fruit, and the added sweetness may exacerbate the diarrhea.
I did accidentallly buy vanilla instead of plain once, didn't notice until it was almost gone, and the chicks did just fine.

You are being a good mother hen, don't let the pouts and tantrums get to ya!
