Sad Update on Haley :( 3 wk old chick sneezing turned worse

Ah okay. Thanks.

Oh yeh, someone mentioned the sugar water being bad for the diarrhea so I get that. Hmm, I'll probably just add the plain to the grocery list and get it when I get it.

Thanks

I know that I'm doing what is good for her so she can do that as much as she wants to. I've had that same attitude plenty of times - just last night even - from my dog for doing who knows what so as a 'momma,' I'm getting used to it

Here is another update, and some questions.

So Haley does seem to be responding to the Poly-vi-sol. Her energy is up more and her intake of food has gone up. Which is good. I know it will take time, but still, looking at her makes me feel horrible

A question though. What causes the liquid poopies? And I'm talking, basically it looks like water, and is loose like water. Is it because she hasn't been absorbing the food properly and nutrients? Because she hasn't been eating much? And, is it bad for the others to drink at it? I try really hard to get them not to, but I don't know, maybe they think it is water or something and go crazy for it as soon as she goes. So I'm concerned about that. I hope they can't get sick from it, or can they?

Also, her legs. I noticed since the other day that it's taken her effort to move about. I noticed that her legs - obviously - aren't as big as her sisters because of the emaciation. But, last night I saw that she couldn't really move about. Now, as I've read, I do not think this has anything to do with spraddle leg. I've been observing her and decided that I would bring up another aquarium and butt it up against the original one so that I could separate out her sister and one of the bantams. Those two are the strongest, whereas Haley and the other bantam seem to be weaker, but I also felt that it would do some good to have the other bantam as company.

Observing Haley today, it occurred to me that her right leg works fine, she can put weight on it, but overall tries not to. I even saw her first thing in the morning, hopping about as if she only had one leg. I gotta say she's a trooper though! But, I am concerned about that since her joints are so delicate right now. I'm thinking maybe it's sprained or something, but what is the best way to help her, and do you think that is what is wrong? I'm going in there right now - every two hours - and lifting her up, giving her the support with a finger in back and finger in front, holding her, and encouraging her to use her leg, but helping her so that she doesn't have to put all her weight on it. Just giving her support enough, but making sure she uses her own leg and weight, which she seems to understand and work with. I figure that maybe that helps her heal her leg and then she can stand to drink her water, and eat her food. Any thoughts?

Okay. What has electrolytes? I don't get the Avia Charge for another week and I only have the Poly-vi-sol for her right now. I'm guessing the feed store might have whatever you say? Otherwise, where would I buy it?

I just noticed too that she has a gurgle to her when she breathes. Like a stuffy nose sound? Can the electrolytes work with that, or will I have to give her something else?

She's gotten good at stretching her wing out too when she starts to move around, for balance I just noticed as well.

Thank you

For electrolytes, you can get her pedialyte. It's not expensive, and you can find it anywhere they have baby stuff.
The diarrhea. That can actually be caused by a blockage. Also by an electrolyte imbalance. I like the idea about starter and yogurt. Good stuff. If she has diarrhea, be careful of dehydration, I know you can't really make her drink, but it's good for her.

Tomorrow is payday so I will be able to get the electrolytes. I called our feed store here in Bothell and she said they have Durvet and it will cost $4.95 so I will be able to get that tomorrow. Same with the yogurt. Hadn't had any money the other day so 'thankfully' I will tomorrow.

Hmm, a blockage. I was thinking about that, but wasn't sure so I'll keep an eye on that. Thank you so much for that info.

She's actually been pretty good at nursing. When I put her by the food - I go in there every two hours to get her to eat and drink, as a just in case she doesn't get up and do it herself thing. So, when I [very] lightly push on the top of her head so it faces her water bowl and see that the [very] tip of her beak touches the water, she drinks, then starts drinking herself. She's a little slow with it, but that's okay. I have the time. I have as much as she needs. After half an hour she will be done with eating and drinking so I put her back by the bed, helping her walk a step or two so I make sure that she's still using her legs and putting a little strength to her bad leg, but I keep a finger underneath her - the way you'd support someone while they are recovering from an accident (my mom went to nursing school and I watched a lot

) - and it seems to be working. She's hobbling around on her own, but gaining strength in her leg - yay!

UPDATE on her progress - She had a solid dropping!!

Oh my god I didn't think I could be so happy about a solid dropping but I am!!! So I take that as meaning her body is absorbing nutrients - at least enough for her to process her feed.

Okay, the Avia Charge 2000. I just got it today (wow 3 days!) and it says 2-3 tsp per gallon of water. Okay. Done that. Now, is this a 'daily' water source? For lifetime usage every day? I did see you reduce the amount in water for adults though. Can I use it for the other two non-sick chicks? I know it's vitamins and such, but I wanted to make 100% sure. I gave Haley the water and she quite enjoyed it. I think she prefers this "med" than my other "med" source I've been giving her

She still makes icky face when I give her the vitamins. And, when giving her the electrolytes. Can I combine that with the Avia Charged water - meaning put it in that water, or do I take out the Avia Charged water, and then use the electrolytes in plain water?

Yes you can give to the other chicks (it is formulated to be given as a daily supplement so no worries bout any of them getting "too much")
As your chickies will not be drinking a gallon of water in a day (and the aviacharge mixture should be changed every 24 hours to a fresh batch ideally)
then I dsuggest you quarter those (so 1/2 tsp to a quart of water) ... if you are wanting to give the electrolytes (four days for that) then make up some cooked human oatmeal and add just enough of that to their feed to make it clump together a bit (you will need very little)... add the avia charge thru that and mix well.

Okay. Great.

Thank you for such clear info and directions

I was wondering about all that. But, I'd rather be 100% clear then goof.

So that means the Avia Charge spoils? Or just becomes less effective?

Oh. Shoot. Almost forgot. What is the dosing for the Durvet? All the bag says is half a bag for tons of water. Seeing as I'm not needing tons of gallons, what is the smaller dosing?

Thank you

usually when using these packages, 1 teaspoon per gallon is suggested...
since you are using the Avia Charge..1/2 teaspoon per gallon should be ok..

others might have different opinion.

please say..what bedding are you using?
you did say you're using an aquarium?
make sure there is plenty of ventilation to prevent and fungus or mold from forming..
