So we just butchered a Pekin duck, only to discover bumblefoot all over his right foot!! he had been limping for a few days, but we thought he had broken his foot or something. This may seem like a strange question, but is he still safe to eat? He was on no medications and never had been. Is it just unsafe to eat the FEET, or is the whole bird infected?

From what I understand, bumblefoot is an infection, generally staph. I wouldn't eat the bird personally. But I guess there is no way of being sure if the infection had spread farther than the foot, and I suppose if it had, that cooking should kill any bacterial in the meat. I'm just going off of opinion though, I have no scientific reason to not eat the duck.

I process meat birds several times a year. Sometimes they have bumble foot. We do not eat the feet. We have not noticed anything in the meat and when cooking it correctly it will kill off anything in it.
