Safe treats for young chicks

XD it's really fun watching them go for noodles!

and rainbowflower, live crickets are also fun! but my button quail is FAR better at catching them than any of my chicks. i love watching them go after them. mine don't seem to into treats though. i gave them some bread today and they seemed to really like it. i'll try giving them a bit of bagel sometime this week. and yeah some chicks just don't like treats until they're older. mine don't seem to go crazy for much. i'll try giving them some cooked salmon. my other chickens LOVE it, but i want to see if the babies will.

I thought about giving mine some little yard worms or leaf worms (tiny red earth worms) from a bait shop, but was afraid of what they might be contaminated with.

If I gave them dirt/grass, would that give grit, or would they still need grit? Mine aren't getting grit yet (just on crumbles right now).

Speaking of grit...would I add it to their crumbles or put it in its own little plate or what?

Everything that I have read on here said that you should offer grit in a seperate bowl. They will eat what they want.

i sprinkle the grit on their food like i would salt on potatoes, not a whole lot. i also give them a mini pot-pie pan full of sand. they make a mess of it but hey,sand is free

I have given mine watermellon. They love it. I give them chick grit which is fine Granite in a dish as free choice as soon as they are given anything besides Starter Crumbles.

Uncooked oatmeal, a chopped boiled egg, shredded cheese, brocolli tops. I tried yogurt but they really dont like it, they are about 2 1/2 weeks so I am trying to stay away from the sugar for now, oh I also give them a handfull of cheerios to play with.

I put chick grit right in with the chick starter and treat them with wheat bread, uncooked oatmeal, chopped up lettuce, chopped up celery, rice crispies, cheerios and earthworms as i find them. They love all of the above. I stay away from sugar treats for now. Good Luck Woody

Agreed. Mine go nuts for hard boiled egg and oats. Grapes did nothing for them, going to try some greens this week (and maybe noodles-that sounds hysterical!).Oh-and my vermicomposting worms will arrive this week, so 1 or 2 might "accidently" fall into the crate...
