Saipan Jungle Fowl Thread

Pics
I bought some Saipans from a hatchery (Cackle) to get started with the breed. Here is a picture of the birds in their pen:

What do you think? I know they are not the same quality as birds from a good breeder, but I hope to add such birds later if I get the opportunity.

Great looking birds. Need lower tail on male. I never kept the pea-combed birds either. Eyes look pearl. I like the blond or platinum back feathers myself. Hazel,if she is still alive, would be proud. I thought I was the last person alive had any real Saipans. I have been to her place several times in the middle to late 90's. She was only about ninety minutes away. If that cock is 32 inches on his feet, I doubt there are more than a dozen Shamos or Malays the same size. Do these birds drink like pheasants by biting at their water?

Please help! I am compiling a list of hatcheries that carry Saipan Jungle Fowl. I know about Ideal, Cackle and Stromberg, but would like to put the most complete list possible up on my blog.

For those who believe that hatchery Saipans are unworthy, perhaps you could give me some information on good breeders of Saipans that sell breeding pairs, chicks or hatching eggs. I'm willing to compile a list of breeders also.

Saipans are the most hated birds you will find. The hatred stems from many not believing in how they came to the USA. I couldn't care any less of the validity of the story. There are NO hatcheries that sell anything even remotely comparable to a real(as seen around the 80's) Saipan. The picture by Old cowhunter is the only one I have seen of current birds that look to be correct. I believe others,as myself, have decided to never sell any due to all the negativity associated with them. Malays are also another hated breed. Get some asils as they are easy to rear and very common in the USA.

Forkman, can you share with us your credentials concerning expertise on Siapans?

I would imagine the people who hate Saipans mostly stay off the Saipan thread. There must be some people that like them or hatcheries would not bother to offer the breed.

No need for hostility. Saipans seem to bring out more negative comments than good. And again, hatcheries do not sell Saipans. There isn't enough Saipan blood in them to make them deserving of the name. Ideal and Cackle are the only ones that I believe raise different groups. Ideal raises their birds while Cackle has a breeder who raises them, again to the best of my knowledge. All other hatcheries drop ship them. I certainly never said I was an expert. Then again many who post regarding them have never actually raised them. I stumbled across Mrs. Mathews through a friend who saw her ad in Grit and Steel. He asked if I wanted to ride along and the rest is history. The birds I have and purchased are as described by the article fom Mr Saylor. I have only ever sold a few as eaters to people who usually killed them before leaving. I do not understad why I would be asked to (prove) my knowledge concerning them. That seems rather childish as I am not offering any. I would only GIVE them to someone who was genuine and not a novelty seeker. I certainly can talk in detail about their growth, demeanor, coloring, etc. Anyone who spends time dong something they enjoy should gain some wisdom in regards to the topic. Old cowhunters description is exact as I have observed. Actually, the best read I have found. Again, wasn't trying to anger anyone.

No hostility intended, rather scrutiny and will accept it as be seen to be childish so long as it keeps everybody on up and up. Especially when party appears to have potential for vested interest in outcome and appears aggressive in displaying his / her knowledge as it compares relative to targeted audience.

Are you interested in preserving Siapans or have some other specific purpose that is of interest to participants of this thread? If yes, then start with pictures. I would like to see some real Siapans with something to serve for scale in background.

Are you that upset that comments were made to suggest that hatcheries don't sell good representations of the breed? I never typed anything in regards to size now did I. Vested interest is laughable. I don't care to sell any birds, therefore there is no vested interest. I have not taken any pictures of any fowl in years and am not going to for you. Geez, I thought someone may be intereted to learn about them from a first hander. I will not respond to you as you only want to fight.

No interest in fighting as it gets to be a waste of time. I would like to see pictures. Written descriptions are inherently vague. Lots of variation in accounts on Siapans concerning weight, height and station. I want to see the proper version that is consistent with what existed back in 1980's. Recent pictures would help. Most parties I have communicated with concerning Siapans do not know where pure ones are theses days.
