Hi- I'm planning to get a young Salmon Faverolle soon (along with a marans), and I was wondering about peoples experiances with their behaviors and egglaying. I've heard that they are really sweet- and good winter layers. Is this true? About how many eggs per week do they lay? And are they freindly? I'd also love to see a picture of their eggs- I've heard that they are cream, but I'm not sure what that really means.

Thanks!

I just bought both a maran and SF! They are about to lay and both are very social with me. However, I do hold mine daily the day they come home.

Aww...they're both adorable :) I'll be sure to hold mine plenty too! I hope yours start laying soon!

We have a SF, she's about 27 weeks old. We named her Sasquatch because of all the extra feathers, but because she's so talkative, her nickname is "Sassy". She's a really good layer, 5-6 eggs a week since she started at about 19 weeks old. I don't have a picture of any of her eggs handy, but they are between brown and white --- kind of pink/cream colored. She's probably 3-4 in pecking order behind the Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, and trades positions with the Blue-Laced Wyandotte.

I wouldn't say she's very social, does not like to be picked up and held - although we started holding her all the time when she was a chick, but then she eventually just started running from us when we tried to pick her up. She'll come running when we go outside, follow us around "bawking", but as soon as we try to pick her up she takes off running -- although she comes right back. She's definitely a beautiful bird though

Enjoy!

We have a SF but ours is still young yet too-17 weeks. We had 2 but even though we picked them up the most when they were little they were very standoffish, to a point where it takes 15 mins. just to get them in at night because they don't want to be touched. I gave one to my brother we kept the other. She recently had this thing with her beak to, we thought it was dislocated but it got better on it's own in two days. Also the color of the chicks is definitely misleading, we thought they were very dark for salmon but the one we kept has been lightening up quite a bit. The other thing is she is so much smaller and shorter than the other ones we have(Dominiques, Wyandottes, Cochins), I wonder if she will catch up eventually. They are a beautiful chicken and that is why we are keeping our skittish one.
