Salmonella Poisoning

I found this thread interesting because my husband just had a 5 day hospital stay from campolybacter infection. Chickens also carry this alot. I too, haven't been able to rule out my flock because they can have it and show no symptoms. I didn't get sick and I'm the one that handles the chicks- they like to sit in my lap. The ER Dr said they don't get many cases but so far it's been traced to eating undercooked poultry. I understand most of it starts at the slaughter house when the insides are turn and bacteria gets on the chicken.
It can come from the chickens but I didn't get mine tested either.

Campylobactor is why I freeze all poultry. I was told more people get sick from that then salmonella...it is killed by freezing...so just incase the center of the neat may not hit the safe temp, no one will get campylobactor

Can someone share a link to purchasing a salmonella test kit? I have never gotten it and either siper immune or my chickens don't have it. I would like to know for sure

Thanks for that info! I didn't know freezing kills it. We weren't eating any bought ready prepared foods the last couple months but now that he's at work he picks up some ready prepared foods. I don't know where he got it, but he has crohns disease as well and it activated that as well so he's been battling with health issues ever since, particularly dehydration. Lost his appetite 😐

So I just recently got over a case of salmonellosis this past week. I had the fever, aches, chills, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pains. Symptoms lasted 3 days. It’s also not Covid because I was tested twice; once with a serology test and second with a nasal swab. Both came back negative. My girls are 3 months old and I clean their coop weekly. I wear a mask when I scoop their poop from the sand floor and I take apart and scrub down their hen house (plastic) with soap as water. I also ALWAYS wash my hands after handling them and refilling their water or feed. How many of you have gotten salmonella from your chickens? Is this common?
First of all let me say I am a microbiologist. While chickens frequently have salmonella, not all do. For example, I tested mine a year ago and they did not. They may now but did not then.

There is a huge multi state outbreak of salmonella from onions going on right now. That is a another place you could have gotten salmonella from.

Did you have a culture to confirm the diagnosis? The only way to be certain of the source is to match the bacteria strains.

It sounds like you are practicing good hygiene. Your chickens may not be the source, they are simply the easiest for your physician to blame.
