My son had a confirmed case of salmonella when he was barely three years old (he is 5 now). We didn't have chickens at the time but he had been around my neighbor's birds two days prior.

It began with a low fever, then diarrhea and then his fever rose suddenly and his diarrhea increased in frequency. At that point, I took him to the pediatrician, who said it was viral and to keep him hydrated. About four hours later, he began with blood in the stool and became lethargic very quickly. At that point, we collected a stool sample in a plastic cup and brought him to the Children's Hospital ER. Honestly, all they did was draw blood and give him IV fluids before sending us home. The IV helped him immensely because it was extremely difficult to force fluids into a 3 year old who went potty every time he took more than a sip of water. I feel like, if he were older, it would have been easier for us to manage.

Five days later, after things had run their course (it had been nearly two weeks at this point), we received a phone call from the hospital confirming salmonella.

I think you know how best to care for your child...trust your instincts. Its the most difficult and most rewarding job on Earth!

I certainly didn't meant to offend anyone

, I was just thinking that this comment crossed a line:

I don't have insurance either. But I'd hock whatever I had to get medical care for my 12 year old son.

I think you need to reassess your priorities and get him to a professional- immediately.

I inferred that she was saying money was more important than the son... which is a horrific accusation! Maybe that wasn't what she was implying... I appologize it it wasn't. I just thought that some defending was warranted so that there wasn't a Mom sitting at home second guessing herself and her decisions... I know that comment would have upset me greatly.

Opinions are great but sometimes people need to be a bit more cautious and compassionate with how they word things.

Sorry if any of my comments upset anyone... surely wasn't intended.

I chose to ignore you until you brought it up.

I edited my original post b/c my husband didn't want me to talk about our lack of insurance, he thought it was too much of personal information that people didn't need to know.

Yes, my son is 12 years old. He has Aspergers, so yes he has to be told to wash his hands and occasionally messes with the chickens. My chickens free range, so I don't feel it is any different than playing with our dogs or cats. Because of his Aspergers he hasn't outgrown the need to put objects or his fingers in his mouth. He also has an obsession with Titanic and anything space related, still can't spell, has dyslexia, is deaf in one ear, and cries a lot.

Would you like to know any more personal information that I didn't feel was pertinent to my original post??

Even if I didn't think it was Salmonella, I would still treat this the same. As long as I felt it was under control at home, there is no need to take him to the doctor. My doctor agrees with me.

The reason I mentioned the fact that we only leave once a week is b/c I meant that he doesn't have much interaction with other people or going to a lot of stores, etc, to pick up germs. It had nothing to do with not WANTING to leave my property. YOU got the wrong impression. We live an hour from our doctor, and the closest gas station is 20 minutes away, so leaving if we didn't have to would be traumatizing for him since he is having diarrhea every 5 minutes. I would rather not put my son through possibly crapping his pants multiple times in the car on the way to the doctor. If we don't HAVE to go to the doctor, I don't want to. If you recall, I said that if it gets out of our control we would take him to the doctor.

I do not appreciate being insulted by you insinuating that I think money is more important than my child and talking down to me like I am a child. My POS mother does that enough, thank you very much. Yes, I asked for advice. ADVICE...not insults.

When Boo has a fever I let it run its course. I watch it closely though. When it gets to a bit over 103F I bring it down a bit. At night, I bring it all the way down because I am very paranoid and eventually I will want to catch 45 minutes of shuteye, lol. Fevers are good. God made them for a purpose.

Rest and fluids are really good things. I'm sure you're watching closely.

It's heart breaking to have a sick child.

My dd, started with diarehha on Saterday am last week, by Sunday night, there was a bit of red in it.. Monday am, there was blood for sure in tollet.
Off to Doc. we went, stool sample, urine sample. Was told clear fluids, till it cleared up, then the brat diet, bring her in if lathargic or gets worse. Keep her well hydrated.

Don't I feel like a bad mom

She's 2.5 and loves to collect eggs, and play with chickens and may not be the best hand washer... Although I know she couldv'e got it any where...

So she had bloody poop till Wednesday night, Thursday still loose stool, Friday Saterday formed but still loose stool..

It was a long week, as I"m sure your was too. I hope this helps...

Because of what was in her poop.. I;'m guessing, there just following up to make sure, we wern't eating out ect. but it's stressfull, and why are they closed on Saterdays? Just so I can worry all weekend, about what they want

She's 2.5, I do the best I can to get her to wash up, after handleing animals but, can only do so much
