I feel exactly what you are saying! I know that those lumps in her tummy will do her in even if she is free from the infection.I understand you are probably extra vigilant in watching her for changes and improvement. If the lumps you feel in her belly are hard and get larger over time, it probably is Salpingitis, for which there is no cure and they don't get better. Symptoms increase over time and their behavior becomes gradually markedly different.
We also administered antibiotics for a while, various times on and off over months when she seemed to deteriorate further. They seem to help make them feel a little better but it will not cure her if that is what she is dealing with.
Every chicken is different so it might be a slower more gradual process in some compared to others.
Yes, the first time is awful. That's why in my mind I had to schedule it for a specific day which somehow made my approach feel more like a task that had to be accomplished vs killing my chicken. Understand, I vacillated for months between she's having a great day and is improving to oh no, she looks terrible and acts very sick so I should help her. Today is the day, no, we'll see how she is tomorrow...etc. On and on it went. By the time she departed, the mass was larger than an orange and filled the palm of my hand. Then I felt guilty for allowing her to linger so long. You need to be comfortable with the timing and the decision so it's right in your heart. She will tell you.
I do hope that's not what she has and that you have many more happy years with her -- with or without eggs.![]()
Mint was good yesterday morning
Midday, she sat in the corner by herself with eyes closed for few hours
Late afternoon she was foraging for bugs, hang out with her flock, fighting with them for food..that is a big improvement on fighting her flock for food as I have been force feeding her lately. She wanted to return to the coop yesterday. I pray each day for her recovery and hope.
This is her 3rd lot of 3 different antibiotic she has. It does not treat her those lumps in her tummy.
