Salpingitis Home Treatement - Lash Egg

They said they wouldn't even be a to take emergency cases over the weekend atm... But I might be able to bump the appointment up to wed.
The vets have an opening and I'm taking her in today.

FYI, she passed what appears to have been two soft-shells yesterday - one normal size and another much smaller with a trail of less vibrant puss - they obviously came out together at the same time. Looking much better than they have been so maybe she's managed to clear the infection herself!

Still taking her in to get everything checked out as she hasn't put a shell on for about two weeks now, but at least it appears she can put a membrane on again.

That great that she passed two softies! :fl

Yup, looks like she's on the mend.

Vet doesn't believe it's viral, said she's in great condition so she's on anti-inflammatories and liquid calcium for now. He thinks it's likely due to her prolific laying and mentioned potentially doing a hormone insert if she keeps having trouble. Also, if she doesn't start putting shell on her eggs in a week, we may need to head back in - but that's all the more expensive side of the diagnosis spectrum.

Flappy will now be dubbed my 'expensive' chicken. Hopefully she's out of the woods and will start taking it easy on the eggs.

The antibiotic I would use is Baytril (enrofloxacin), and I would give her meloxicam too. Since a vet is an option, I would get her in sooner rather than later because from what I know, this needs to be treated ASAP. Email those pictures to the vet and ask them for their opinion.

I’m so glad I saw this post! I have a hen going through this same exact thing.

casportpony, for Salpingitis, would it be a 5-day treatment with the enrofloxacin, or would it be longer? I’ve already started her on it (on day 3) and I’m seeing much improvement.

I think it would depend on the level of infection. A longer treatment might be beneficial, but with that comes the risk of a secondary yeast infection, for which you will need something like ketoconazole or fluconazole.

So am I best to just give the 5 days and see how she does? Or where could I get the ketoconazole/fluconazole? And how would I know if she has a yeast infection? Ugh!

Lizzy733, how’s your hen doing now?
