After having my "BUT I DON'T WANT ANOTHER ROOSTER!!!!" temper tantrum, I've come to terms & have gotten over the denial about one of my new 9 chicks being a rooster. I'll have a total of 3 rooster, & 23 hens & that's just the way it's going to be!

But a new question has come to light ..... could my little roo & one of the little pullets be dark brahma crosses?!?!? All 9 chicks came from Mt. Not-So-Healthy. I've gotten a cross breed from them before. In my first batch of chicks ever, last year, Ariel turned out to be an Araucana (Ameraucana .... Easter Egger .... whatever that hatchery has ......) & dark brahma cross. With the look of their heads, I can't help but wonder ...... the pullet looks so different from any other dark brahma pullet I've had, & the little roo has so much black on his head area (like the pullet) vs Peter & Popeye when they were little. Does anyone else think they might be mixed? If so, what with??? *They're 6 weeks old*

Here are some pics of a normal little pullet, the pullet in question, & the little roo.

The pullet, a little upset after I touched her back!

Little Roo wouldn't look at the camera!

They're all the same age .... I can't get over how much larger Roo is!

Peter & Popeye when I first got them. They were about 8 weeks old. Drove over an hour to get them from a breeder because I didn't get any roos in my first batch of 15 chicks!

This is Ariel .... my little cross-breed. She lays greenish-blue-brown tinted eggs. :)

There can be lots of variation between individuals of the same breed. They all look like dark brahmas to me, but its always a possibility that the hatchery had an oopsie.
If you Google images of dark brahmas, you'll notice some sport lighter heads like your chick.

I guess you'll find out the truth when she gives you an egg :)

The lighter head one is the normal looking one to me. The other 6 chicks, & all 15 that I got last year look like her. But the black headed pullet & the little roo look odd to me. Like they may be an oppsie with a pure black breed?

Here are some dark headed Brahmas

(not my pics)

Your mixed up hen had a light looking head, so I just assumed that was what you were thinking was off. They all look "normal" to me

Brahmas can look like either of your chicks ( i'm talking about your females). Here's a pic of a light headed Brahma (she is mine).

I've only ever had light headed dark brahmas, so the dark headed one thru me for a loop! But the picture you shared of the dark headed one is beautiful! I hope my little girl grows up to look like that ..... it will be neat having one so much darker than the rest. Thanks everyone!

I FINALLY found a picture of an adult dark headed dark brahma! It may be a bantam, but she looks so similar to my little pullet!
