San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hi, I'm new here and wanted to introduce myself to other San Diegan Chicken-keepers. We have 3 hens in the Normal Heights. They are a Buff Orpington and 2 Barred Rocks - we raised them from chicks and they are about 7 months old now (and started laying at 5 months!) I have a question, this will be our girls' first winter, do you heat your coop in the city, or are they ok in there at night? Thanks in advance for the advice!

As long as your coop is dry and not drafty, you don't need heat in most of SD Co.

Welcome to BYC and us Sandy Eggo people..... LOL

from the High desert east in Jacumba.

as long as they can get out of moisture and wind they are good to go. Heat in coops is not really necessary in these latitudes.... For example even though I am sixty miles east and get some snow in the wintertime.... I provide over head protection and a wind break during the winter but for the most part my coop is really only a Dog kennel.

Down here same deal.... all good. Though making sure they are secure from predators is important at night time. That would be about the only reason to actually have a coop.

welcome again....

Hi folks, have met a few of you in the past. Roxie (my Cochin) has developed a paralized leg from about the elbow down. Has anyone heard of this issue? I took her to the vet and couldn't see anything on xrays. Blood work was normal. She doesn't use or stand on the leg. They think it may be a tumor, but unsure. Any ideas? She seems to be normal mentally (in case you were thinking heavy metal).

Next, I want to find a good home for my 4 girls. I've had predators kill some of my favorites - it's just too sad for me. Thought I had it predator proof. Roxie and Flufferbutter, my white Silkie, are probably 4-5 years old. I have two cochin/serama mix girls that are about 1.5 yrs old. Anyone interested? You must have been taking care of chickens for awhile and have a predator proof area. Help!

I'm fairly new too, but everything I read is if your chickens are at least 5 weeks old then they are more than fine with anything San Diego can dish out. Provided the birds can stay dry when there is wet weather. It seems like here there is a real emphasis on tons of ventilation. It's the most important thing after making sure your chickens stay dry. We visited the Penasquitos historic ranch house recently and they have goats, extensive gardens and chickens. The coop for the chickens is entirely open with just wire mesh. Hope this helped.

paralysis always sets off my mareks sensors but very doubtful if she is 4-5.

good luck

Hi All,

I'm selling my Myotonic goats if anyone is interested or knows anyone that's interested. Myotonics are great for fencing and they are also easy to care for. I'm moving towards milk goats. Let me know if you are interested. I have 4 does, a young buck (1 year old), one wether, one doeling and one buckling.

Things have calmed down for our family so I'd love to know when the next SD meetup is!

My RIRs and Orphingtons just started laying last week but our other 16 hens are holding back, almost 6 months old! I'm dying to see the eggs from Dana's Marans and my Ameracaunas!

This is such an addiction. I go out and stare at them all day long. Ok after work for an hour or so but I could easily make it all day! I make my tea and sit in the hammock and just watch them! Have you seen this video? This is me.

After hatching barnyard mixes (RIR and Olive eggers?) from our neighbors, Dana's Marans, and 2 Barnavelders from another lady in Ramona; getting 5 Ameracaunas from Ideal Poultry; and 2 Orphingtons, a Silky, a BLR Wyandotte, 2 SL Wyandottes, and an Australorp from feed stores or Chickens Galore we have 3 roos and 20 hens. What am I missing? ;) LOL I am already thinking about what breeds I want to add in the Spring!

Sidenote: how do you put what u have down below in your signature or whatever? I want to list my "babies" down there --- |
