San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

So I came home yesterday, after an early evening walk, and went to transfer the new cochins back to their dog crate to put in the garage for the night. (I found a 4 sided dog kennel on clearance at Petsmart, and ziptied some shade cloth to the top, this is where Marsha & Millie spend the day while in quarantine.) But I almost had heart attack - Millie was missing!

I searched high & low, flashlight in hand, calling her name. Thought I heard a peep every now and then, but couldn't be sure. I checked every flower pot, pile of leaves, low shrubs, every nook & cranny of the lower yard. I even looked up in the trees thinking maybe she was roosting up there. I was not going to give up until I found her, she had to be somewhere!

Then "peep peep" about a foot away, there she was just sitting in the lime tree looking happy as a clam. Whew! Today I'll have to add a few more zip ties to the pen, she must've got out that way, didn't look like she dug under. Silly Millie!

YAY! Good thing you found Millie!!!!

I've had a chicken or two go missing, but they always come back, I'm sure they were just hiding in the bushes...

Yes they are beautiful! Ameraucanas? I still really want one ( and it would be fun to raise a chickie!), but I'd have to swap out one of my black australorps to make room . . .

You don have to swap anything if you get a serama to raise up, they are itty bitty!!!

Every night when I close the coop door, I have my little flashlight. I count up fifteen heads (or rears - LOL), and tell everyone goodnight. I can't tell you how many times I've missed one (three of them like to cram in one nesting box) and have panicked a bit.

The eggs are gorgeous! So jealous. Are they EE, Ameraucana or ??? Someday I will try hatching eggs, but for now I'll leave it to the experts.

I'm picking up some mealworms from Anke this Saturday... I have a feeling I'll be mobbed when I get back home!

White Mountain those eggs are beautiful and yes it will be great to have some lovely Ameraucanas in the area. Your are LF right ? I have some bantam BBS Am eggs incubating now due on the fourteenth. Although I have

I wish that I had given them to Phage to incubate since my hatches on shipped eggs are bad. But the distance is large.

ENZOLOV here is my permission to swap an Australorpe for any other birds that you want !

dfdesigns Is it nice to tuck your bids in like that. Just don't broadcast that info to anyone with a "zipped up mind."=(closed )

I go out to tuck mine in too. I have to make sure they're in the coop and not in the run for the night. The run isn't predator proof yet. I love the little sounds they make, like they are saying "thank you!"
Where are you getting your meal worms? I'm not familiar with Anke. Good prices? I was working in the garden this afternoon and found a big fat grub, walked it over to the girls and my big EE RAN off with it!!

I need to get some for little Red Star...
