San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Trader joes has fertile hatching eggs. They are white legbars so excellent layers. I sell lavender orpington eggs. I can give you some lav orp cross eggs for free. They are blue and brown producing crosses. Really pretty hens.

When shopping at Trader Joes for firtile eggs look at the cartons and read the date stamp. Freshest is best. and the hatch rate is appx 50 percent. Though I know someone who got 90 percent.

The chicks are from some sort of sexlink and it depends on the supplier... So they will NOT be sex link you will get two types of chicks from the hatch. But often times the root stock is Leghorn....

I have had hatch rates on TJ eggs from 70% (once) to zero ( several times) so a bit of a gamble.
The resulting hens are not at all smart, but are sweet and they lay extreemly well!!!

isolation is easy to do a bit of plastic barrier fence a little PVC and voila... Broody coop. you dont even have to glue the PVC so you can use it else where later.

Is anyone interested in East Fresian Gull pullets from Greenfire Farm? My neighbor has 3 and is looking to sell one or two. They are beautiful, rare and good layers!

I never thought I would like my Trader Joe hens as much as I do. They look like white Leghorns but lay a nice light brown egg. And they lay absolutely fantastic: since December my two girls have laid more than 530 (265 each and still laying) eggs. They do not make a fuzz about a laid egg unlike my other breeds. Latest at 8:00AM they are done laying and ready to roam the yard. And I have to disagree with Phage: mine are exceptional smart, very docile and not skiddish, but their wings need to be clipped or they fly the fence.
