San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hello chicken fans! I'm looking to increase my flock by about 15 or so. Where is my best bet for a variety of pullets in North County Inland? I've had some bad luck with Escondido Feed's 90% pullet selection. Is it worth shipping costs to use MPC or online hatcheries? Thanks in advance!

Hi! Ive never ordered from a hachery. But i can tell you what my friend said she LOVES her layers from MyPetChicken.com. Only one chick had died. Which is pretty good. They have alot of different breeds including rare breeds. Prices there are pretty easy.

Thanks for your reply! I actually have 16- day olds in a cart ready to order at MPC but shipping alone is $70. I'm looking for a pretty traditional group of RIRs,BRs,EEs,CL,various orpingtons & maybe a couple welsummer or giant. Are the cream legbar & welsummer about the same size as the others listed above? I've had the other breeds before & loved them.

When and where is that meetup?

Here is the info if you friend the organizer on Facebook he will add you to the event.

When you say bad luck, do you mean you keep getting cockerels or other issues too? If its cockerels, about how many are you talking? I've had one from there, but I've got most of my chicks from Vista Country Feed with zero cockerels so far.

Cockerels 2 of 9 first time, 1 of 6 second time but the 2nd time there were 2 or 3 that got sick and ended up infecting the rest of my coop with what we're thinking was mareks. I only have 3 left :( I don't know how common it is for EEs to lay huge eggs but one of the first round only laid giant eggs once a week and it ended up binding her no matter what I did and she didn't make it after 2 years of soaking her bum and lubing it up. I know chickens are prone to different things but I know that the second batch did the rest in. It was rough watching it affect different birds when I thought they were finally better.
I think I'm going to give Hawthorne a shot since I think they have vaccinated chicks.
