San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hey everyone! Any suggestions/recommendations on the best crow deterrents? Those pesky, black birds have taken to stealing all of my chicken's feed as well as stealing all my darn eggs!

Thanks in advance!

LOL... Crows or Ravens.... Both are smart problem solvers... Bout the only way is to make it so they cant get to the eggs. or feed.

Crows are smaller than Ravens and have a squared off tail... Ravens have a rounded tail.

Crows also fly in flocks of thirty or more.... all Family members.... Ravens fly in smaller family flocks... five or six....

birds in the Corvid Family are a particular fascination for me. Crows Ravens magpies Jays..... there are about 120 different species in the family

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvidae

but Crows and Ravens have documented intelligent levels similar to apes.

I personally have had a crow Take off the ground just as I came away from a stop sign.... He was carrying something and kept looking back at my car... then he dropped it and swerved off. I looked in the rear vew mirror and he was back on the ground eating what could only be a Nut.

sorry about the documentation set.... but follow some of the steps by the humane society... Once deterred they will move on.

Thanks for the info Deb! I don't hate the birds, I just hate that they are stealing my chickens food and my breakfast! LOL The husband put up a scare crow but it only lasted about a week before they got wise. He now has a few old cd's hanging around the coop. I just need a few deterrents that I can alternate around to keep them guessing. As for if they are crows or ravens, hard to say for sure. I'm not at home right now so I can't take a minute to examine their shape. But it's one of them!

LOL I know.... doesnt matter.... they are messin with your chickens... A treadle feeder may help I dont know how heavy crows and ravens are. I do know they will go right in through a pop door for Vittles. Another thought is doing a roll out nest...

there are several of us but its been quiet lately. I am in Santee right now but when I move back home it will be Jacumba and that is where I will have my chickens.

Just a forewarning. Back yard chickens has announced that they are changing platforms. So everything will be moved lock stock and barrel to a new site. When they start that process this site will be available as read only. Its going to be a monumental task because there are over 400,000 members....

and their accompanying conversations not to mention photos.

I have been on the new site and its somewhat different user interface. If you go to the home page here there will be a link as to what is going on and when.

What kind of chickens do you have? And how many ?

Before Coyotes got mine I had Welsummers and Guinea fowl.

Vanna I was thinking. I am in the same kind of environment as you.... and I have Crows and Ravens big time... But the most stealing I have experienced was from Ground squirrels.... Not only will they eat food but they also will steal eggs. Little Bas$%ds. They mined my coop so one day when I went in I sank up to my ankles when the ground gave way.

Oh and My turkey tom was death to intruders....... Or thought he was...

Mr T did a great job keeping Barnyard peace. Wild Turkey He was a good flier too. His wife Mrs T was always around ignoring him.... ::snort::

wanted to throw this in before the site switches over.
