San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hi carahamer, no I don't have MGB. You must have me mixed up with someone else. I just have a couple NN bantams and a mixture of LF.

Sunny , I don't think it's ridiculous to have a house chicken, as long as she's happy. My mom has a chicken that follows her into the house and wants to hang out with mom

It's very cute except that my mom doesn't want a house chicken.

I have found a way to keep my D'Uccles with my LF. I bought some chinchilla cages off of CL and I'm planning (key word) on hanging them on the back of the run.

They would then have 2 x 12 sq. ft. of space and not infringe on any of the LF's space. I'm excited...except not for the painting part

I'm so sick of painting!!

When I picked up the cages they were not cleaned out.

After I removed all the bedding I discovered some little insects running around. They were so minuscule, couldn't
tell what they were although some looked like lice. So I took apart all the pieces that I could, made a strong bleach mixture (pitted my fingers--OUCH) and made sure it got into
all the crevices. They're made out of wood so I really hated to do it but better safe than sorry. Hosed them off and let them dry in the sun. When I checked them out later I
still found some little insects crawling in them!!!

I can't believe they survived the bleach!

SOoooooooo, I'm thinking of dusting the corners good with poultry powder...or should I just prime and paint them? I don't know if chinchillas and chickens share the same type
of parasites.

I am wondering............? Parasites and need a host and of course most living things need water and food. Sometimes if you deprive a living thing of water and food it dies. So I am wondering KKH, (if you are not in a hugh hurry) let those wooden cages sit in the sun without a source of food an see if the "insects" die or with lice you are suppose to put pillows in plastic bags to deny oxygen supply. Well Allison I recommend more research before you put the d'uccles in their new cages.

There hadn't been animals in the cages for quite some time....months. She just hadn't cleaned them out. I'm wondering what kind of insect would live in the bedding without the host myself. There was no way for birds to get into the cages and I didn't see any mouse droppings..just old chinchilla poo. Yes, I'll have to look into this more.

ETA: Looked it up and chinchillas don't get external parasites. One bug looked to be a tiny beetle (smaller than a flea) and the other resembled an aphid, no wings. I'll still give them time to vacate the premises now that there isn't any decomposing bedding in them.

I think that was my post. I don't have Modern game, I have Old English Game. I expected to see long legged versions of what I have, but then I remembered you have a different color.

Mine are black breasted red, and had dark brown racing stripes when they were little. Now their coloring has completely changed. I like the modern games though, they are really different. I also like those Shamos. They look like dinosaurs! I'd be in really big trouble if I had a bigger yard.

Also they could be eating the carbon/nitrogen rich poop. (Somebody has to eat it if worms can not get to it.) sound like I should have been a biology major. ha ha

With the MM order, I do have one more question: are we allowed to add in additional items that aren't organic? I didn't see any unsweetened beet pulp pellets on the list, but I could definitely use a few bags of those, too.
Anything that is on their website/ price list.

Here's what we have so far. Running tab, so let me know if you want to change anything or add etc..

Were going to aim to get the order in before the meet-up so we can all pickup there- you would pay for your feed to me when you pick it up, and then I pay the invoice in full after they deliver... Easy peasy!

Modesto Milling; http://www.modestomilling.com/index.html

Also, I will assume you mean regular (not soy-free) feed, and 50 lbs (not 25 lbs) unless you specify otherwise.

Your welcome, and thank you too! Can't turn down free chickens... even if they are boys...

They will live a happy safe life. I'm determined to find out what they are though!

Oh and ditto... I know I saw you at the meet-up but I don't think we had a chance to chat!

OMG eagle rock looks BEAUTIFUL!!! Wish I had a horse to go riding there! Maybe we should plan a day hike there!

How about Cottage Cheese? Mine prefer boiled and do not care for scrambled eggs.

I hope she gets stronger. Poor thing.
