Yes, I mentioned it to Cari that one of the Barred Rock Sister's that I got from her is doing the squat thing and that I felt quite a few of mine were going to lay SOON. But the Delawares we have are a little younger and mine do not look ready at all to me. No reddening of the comb or any other signs.
I did not leave forks and knives. I threatened w/ a Stock Pot.

Just in the last two weeks or so, mine started to do the "egg squat" everytime I'd go to pick her up!! That's a pretty good sign that they are close, when they start doing that.
One of my Barred Rocks started laying in Jan. and she was born on 10/20!

I got mobbed the other day feeding them mealworms. They were all over the place and almost tripped me up. Well, today I was smart and held on tight to my container because they kept pecking at it. It was another wild scene. They follow me around and peck at me if I do not throw them out fast enough. Gez, they must have eaten a couple hundred today. It is never enough with these guys. I doubt there is any going back.
I think I will just send them to live with Crazy Huhn and they can get all they want.

That IS a funny story: little Polish baby chick toes sure look like mealworms .....
Guess they need some more mealworms so they know that worms taste better than toes...... at least that is what I have been told by my chickens...... (have not tried either one....)
Al, are you sure it is the same chicken and not another? Because gez! I have been ripped OFF. So it was only 3 months old and laying? You better go and clone her. I want her BAD.
Just found this thread. I hope I can come to the next meet-up. My fiance and I started with 3 chicks in April. Lost 2 to a coyote just weeks after they started laying, then got some 5 month olds about 2 months ago. 4 out of 5 birds laying right now
We're learning more and more as we go along, and probably spent way too much $ designing and building coops. But it is worth it to see happy chickens.

Hi Crafty, sorry to hear about your poor chickens.
Hope you can make the next meetup, it's so nice to meet other local chicken friends and share stories and advice. Welcome, and stick around the thread and get to know everyone. We are a great bunch.
Welcome, Craftychicken! This is a great group of people. (Or should it be "Peeple"? HA!)
I figured out today that I have 10/13 laying; the only ones who haven't yet started are the 2 Polish and a Sultan. That means all six of the latest batch of pullets (who were hatched 12/1/10) are all being productive members! Way to go, ladies!
My 2000 mealworms were gone early last week. My chickens get positively psycho for Anke's worms!
HELLO Craftychicken Welcome to this little group of San Diegans!!! We are an interesting bunch, in a good way.....
OK I am horrible with names, I even introduced my self as my dog Karma once, but who on this thread was the english woman with the Beautiful egg laying blue laced something or others that was at the last meet up. MY horse vet friend is looking for 6 laying hens to start as chicks, She was going to go to chicken days but I told her to support out local Chicken people, that the chickens will be healthier and lay longer!!! So I am stupid when it comes to breeds, I know gamefowl, serama, and modern game bantams all suck for egg production!!! I need pretty to look at hens, that are good at the egg laying business, 2 pullets each three different breeds!! can we fill this order??? they dont have to be show quality.

And oHHHH yeah so when can we have the chicken meet up again?? I will have baby COCOPOPS on the 03.21 pending all goes well in the incubater!!
