Agreed!

The only way to beat this is with numbers and by being organized. Showing up to meetings, innudating them with protest calls and letters.

Next board meeting is on Sep 13th in the morning. There is a petition out there too, I was only #79 when I signed. Everybody should at least give it a try and sign to get the numbers up, there is an area for you comments/arguments, your email and postal address is kept confidential. The ordinance has been approved but it hasn't been voted on yet. If enough are against it with legitimate arguments presented it's still possible it won't pass or at least will have acceptions to the rule if they are pointed out by someone/anyone and by enough. Already the kid's FFA projects are excluded from the ordinance, maybe hobby breeders or at least bantams, rare and endangered birds, meat birds or ornamental breeds could possibly be excluded if enough strong arguments are brought to their attention???

Sign the petition!!! : http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/San-Diego-Rooster-Ordinance/

If everyone could help me out in putting together a list of arguments as to how and why this ordinance negatively affects us I'll be happy to draft a letter. I just don't have a lot of time to research all of everyone's feelings regarding this. If you belong to a group you would like to mention as backing that may be helpful too. I can use BYC members, San Diego Chickens Members or ??? Breed specific clubs may be useful too. I wish they would take into account some breed identification in the ordinance as it is so obvious some are just not used for fighting... ie. my 7.6 oz serama roo! When it comes to the noise arguments... he can't even make half the noise of a crow sitting on my roof in the morning if he tried his hardest.

Or how about big fat meaties? It's pretty easy to spot a fighting breed if you use a little chicken field guide or something like they have to do to identify whether you are illegally keeping a native or endangered species... and if there are multiples in tiny single cages and icky conditions... fine make a law about that, but can they just leave the silkies and polish (poodle chickens. lol)and our kids pets and our health conscious dinner alone!!?? We didn't do anything wrong and we care about our chickens responsibly without affecting anyone. Make cockfighting a felony (it's only a misdemeanor) and maybe they will keep it in Mexico instead of holding them here in San Diego, especially if it's one count per bird along with animal abuse etc... Facing jail time could significantly reduce offenders IMO.

No kidding! I agree. I live peacfully and just want to be left alone.........I pay my taxes so get out of my face!! But that's just me....I can be pretty orenery!

Well said Tammy!

I'll start the list.

A straight run of meaties to be butchered at 12 weeks old. Typically ordered at 25. Half to be roos, so 12 roosters. Ooops over my limit, what do I have to do, order pullets for butchering? What about my 12 roos in the brooder, do those count too?

Since we are all in the same boat, re-homing excess roos locally just isn't going to happen. Should we cull at 6 weeks, 6 months, a year??? We are suddenly sounding like China with its restrictions on the amount of girl babies. Where will it end??????

I still hope for them to re-zone all of San Diego, but in favor of backyard chickens.

Sorry, "Quiet Please", you have not introduced yourself and your poultry yet and I did not have a chance to meet you at one of our meet-ups (unless you have a new screen name), but I am certainly looking forward to it, because I cannot tell if you are serious or just sarcastic. Do you really believe an ordinance like this will be a noise reduction or a protection from animal abuse?
Are you aware that history has shown that ENC cases have started in commercial egg laying/meat bird facilities rather than in backyard chicken flocks?
FYI: If just one neighbor complains about chicken noise (hens or roosters), it can be considered to be a nuisance, no matter how many birds someone actually houses and the owner might have to get rid of the nuisance.
I do not have any roosters (yet), because I am too close to my neighbors but if I should buy my own property in San Diego county I do want to be able to.

wwmicasa1: excellent point. No more than 2 poodles or 2 "Wiener dogs", because otherwise the owner will be considered to support dog fighting??? That is pretty much the comparison of having 2 Cochin, 2 Silkie, 2 Serama roosters.....

oops, am I getting sarcastic now or am I just fed up with incompetent politicians?

Some arguments I came up with:

Limits the number of roos you can keep to provide a diverse gene pool for breeding flocks.

Limits the number of breeds that can be kept as breeder flocks. With only 6 roos, at most I could keep 2-3 flocks of different projects/breeds of chicken - Or 3 lines of one type of chicken only. As opposed to the 5 breeds and 9 or so colors and varieties I have now.

Will force me to cull (If I can't find a buyer) or sell entire breeder pens of birds. Losing a lot of money and years of work.

Will force me to choose between the roosters I keep as pets, and those I have for my breeding projects.
