San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

CONGRATS on the new home.

I am going through the same roller coaster ride but it is not my first but it might as well be.

I hope I can make it. We should be closing on our new house the week prior, so it's kind of iffy.

Nancy, good luck with your new home. We, too, have been through this before, but it's never been so nerve-wracking. We're selling and buying simultaneously, and our buying is dependent on the selling. Stressful!

Good luck!

And bummer about the boys.

Thank you!

And I will (OF COURSE) give any back to you if they end up being females.

Cari, you're too sweet. If any turn out to be girls, I would love to have them, but ONLY if you have no use for them. You've been generous enough to take them off my hands, that you are entitled to them no matter what the sex.

Cheers!

Oh my! I can only imagine how stressful that would be. Mine is driving me crazy and I do not have to sell to buy.

It will be ALL worth it in the end and we will both sit back and laugh about it later.

I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the main reasons I am moving is because I want to keep a BCM roo. They are illegal here. I am in LOVE with him. I have handled him since he was young. Not chick though. He has always tolerated me and been great. I brought him outside to show the neighbor and he pecked me on the neck but I figured he was just upset about being in a new place. Well, yesterday he attacked me. At first I felt a peck on the back of my leg. I turn and see him. No big deal, most of my chickens peck me. He comes around and pecks me really hard on my knee and just keeps on going. I try to leave and he follows me and continues to peck really hard. A few days ago, I held Blondie up and was playing with her and this same BCM came up and tried to peck me on the head. I got up really fast and he missed me. I dismissed it since I was holding one of his ladies.

Is there any hope? I so want to keep him but not if he is going to attack me. I am going to

if he has to hit a soup pot.

Any suggestions are welcome.

YOU need to show him NOW that you are the dominate one! Before it gets worse... Just like a dog.

WRONG thing to do. Every time he makes a mean move towards you, you need to step TOWARDS him. You can walk around slowly chasing him/ blocking his way. You can also "kick" towards him (gently of course), when he does that. He thinks he's alpha-roo. You need to speak his language to show him he's not. Stalk him. Put on some heavy clothes and keep walking AT him, keep him moving till he turns around and runs. Do this every time you go out. You can also grab him up, and hang him upside down by his feet. After he stops struggling, tuck him under your arm and carry him around while you do chicken chores. You can also use the "hug" method. I will catch them and hold their head to the ground until they stop fighting. Then I hold them (hug) very firmly in my arms. I am calm and I try to make them relax if possible but I don't stop until they have it figured out that I am the only boss there is. Pick him up and hold him on his back until he is calm, and then ONLY set him down when he is calm and doesn't fight you. If he does, back on his back. You need to show him you are NEVER afraid of him, don't turn your back, don't back up, and NEVER walk away, or he has won.

There is a really good rooster rehab page, I'll find it and post it.

Hi Nancy,
I've done just as Cari has said and my roo(s) past and present don't bother me....the kids are another story.
He may need a reminder once in a while. I also don't let him mount any hens in front of me. If he does I run at
him and will actually knock him off the hen.
Sorry, it's the down side of roos.

Hi - I too do just as Cari described. I give them several chances and repeat the steps and if they don't striaghten up after all that then they have to go down the road...........I don't kill them...I just couldn't do it.

I put up with a mean hand raised roo once and I have the scars to prove it and I will not do it again.

Sometimes, although not very often ..they are just mean.

Good luck.............don't back down..he'll know you're scared.
