Deb, they are showing up now - picture and everything!

Dumb question: can chickens and ducks (like two) live together happily? Would the ducks go in the coop with the chickens? (I'm obviously very duck ignorant, but I have a few egg customers who are interested in duck eggs.)

I think Ducks nest on the ground and are very very messy I think they can share a run but its best if you build them a duck coop. Down on the ground with materials that can be hosed out periodically.

I want Runner ducks. They are soo Cute. And are supposed to be good layers.

Does anyone where I can buy wazine and some other wormer for follow up? One of my hens is acting like she has worms and they probably all need to be wormed since I have no clue if they ever have been. I live in Clairemont. Maybe I should just order online?

Hi Hilary!

You can get Wazine from most feed stores. Both feed stores by me carry it.

I've used it before but it really isn't a very effective wormer, it's weak and only kills large roundworms.

The very best one you can use is called Valbazen, it kills ALL worms that chickens can get. It's a tad more expensive but it lasts FOREVER. You should be able to find it at most feedstores too, in fact the one by me has it, but I chose to buy it online as it was cheaper.

Let me know if you need more info I have all the dosages and stuff.

Hi Hilary,

I got this info from dawg53, BYC resident expert on deworming you could say. It's what I do now annually when the girls go into molt. I give the two different types of dewormer just because I don't want the birds to build up a resistance to one particular drug. You can, of course, only treat with Valbazen.

Large round worms are skinny and up to 3 inches long. Cecal worms are actually another type of roundworm but smaller 1/4"-2"...nasty buggars. Wazine wont kill cecal worms, only large roundworms. Valbazen kills all known worms that chickens can get. If you still have some wazine, use it. Dosage is one ounce per gallon of water. Set the wazine water out for them in the morning BEFORE you let them out, they are usually thirsty when first let out and will drink the water. Ten days later, dose them with the valbazen....that will kill any and all worms for sure. You might want to worm them semi annually afterwards.

Valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer. You can get it from Jefferslivestock.com or call them. They ship it pretty quick. Dosage is 1/2cc for standard size chickens and 1/4cc for smaller chickens. It is given orally...shoot it right down their throat...guaranteed worming. There's a 14 day egg withdrawal. -dawg 53

So, to sum it up, I give Wazine in their water and ten days later give them Valbazen orally. You MUST do a follow up deworming 10 days later. You can't eat the eggs during this time or for 14 days after the final treatment. I toss mine to the crows that I like to keep around as they chase the hawks away.

Look whos giving me the stinkeye now....... VBG
I ordered twenty Welsummers.... five boys and fifteen girls.
I got them at the feed store but the hatchery marked the boys heads with some sort of red dye..... Too cute.
