I use ivermectin (pour-on for cattle formula) once a year, 2 doses 10 days apart, for all birds as it kills all worms and anything blood sucking. Just about a 1/3 ml on their neck (about half is absorbed as the rest stays on the feathers). Quick and easy peasy :) . If done during moult you don't even need to discard any eggs.

does anybody have a incubator that I could borrow?
even if it is for a week when i have lockdown.

Mine is full and we had a mama hen that decided she was not wanting to sit on her eggs anymore.
So now im over loaded in mine and they are a week older then the ones we set.
Ive candled them and some apper to be viable, the dark shells of the wellies are hard to see through,so i dont want to toss them until they are older and i can be posative they are not fertile.

and come hatching time they will need to go into lockdown a week before the others i set.

thanks

Hi Hilary!

You can get Wazine from most feed stores. Both feed stores by me carry it.

I've used it before but it really isn't a very effective wormer, it's weak and only kills large roundworms.

The very best one you can use is called Valbazen, it kills ALL worms that chickens can get. It's a tad more expensive but it lasts FOREVER. You should be able to find it at most feedstores too, in fact the one by me has it, but I chose to buy it online as it was cheaper.

Let me know if you need more info I have all the dosages and stuff.

I gave my hen a bath today and I found mites on her. No eggs just the adults. Yuck! Her vent also has this kind of scabby hood over the top... Her poo smells especially rank! I read I can put Ivomec on her neck to treat the mites. Should I still treat them all for worms? If so, should I buy wazine, ivomec and valbazen? It's getting expensive but I guess then I will have it.

What do you think?

Actually that's a little incorrect. Ivermectin does NOT kill tapeworms. I use it the same time I use my Valbazen as Ivermectin does a great job of getting rid of mites and creepy crawlies.

Hi Hilary,

I got this info from dawg53, BYC resident expert on deworming you could say. It's what I do now annually when the girls go into molt. I give the two different types of dewormer just because I don't want the birds to build up a resistance to one particular drug. You can, of course, only treat with Valbazen.

Large round worms are skinny and up to 3 inches long. Cecal worms are actually another type of roundworm but smaller 1/4"-2"...nasty buggars. Wazine wont kill cecal worms, only large roundworms. Valbazen kills all known worms that chickens can get. If you still have some wazine, use it. Dosage is one ounce per gallon of water. Set the wazine water out for them in the morning BEFORE you let them out, they are usually thirsty when first let out and will drink the water. Ten days later, dose them with the valbazen....that will kill any and all worms for sure. You might want to worm them semi annually afterwards.

Valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer. You can get it from Jefferslivestock.com or call them. They ship it pretty quick. Dosage is 1/2cc for standard size chickens and 1/4cc for smaller chickens. It is given orally...shoot it right down their throat...guaranteed worming. There's a 14 day egg withdrawal. -dawg 53

So, to sum it up, I give Wazine in their water and ten days later give them Valbazen orally. You MUST do a follow up deworming 10 days later. You can't eat the eggs during this time or for 14 days after the final treatment. I toss mine to the crows that I like to keep around as they chase the hawks away.

Hope this helps.

X2. This is what I do, and I add Ivermectin Pour-on as well for mites. =)

Thanks its been almost seven years since I had Chicken chicks to brood up. This time I went overboard. I went to my moms house where they are to bring mom dinner and I peeked in and they were all hunkered down with a sleepy look to their faces. I think I finally figured out how to get the temperature right.

Soooooo different than Guinea Keets. I think Guineas Jack boot all night long and fall asleeep where ever they are..... I found one flopped over the feeder sound asleep one time....
