San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

I unbutton my jeans and frantically smash the little demon on my thigh. My mind is filled with images of a line of fire ants marching up my legs. The pants must come off NOW. Meanwhile I'm standing next to this very nice person I just met, and I don't want to act like a complete nutter. I said "I hope you don't mind if I take my pants off but I'm terrified of fire ants" or something to that effect, but she could have minded and the world could have been watching and those pants were coming off, stat. Thankfully Cari was not scandalized by my sudden pants-less status. I turn the pants inside out, check my legs and shoes for more ants, and decide I'm clear to re-clothe myself. We conclude our business and I load up my car and drive off.

My question is this: Cari - you told me when I first came to your farm that the dogs were rescues, and had had a bad experience with a woman in pants, and that they would attack me unless I took off my pants and hopped up and down the driveway for a few minutes to get them used to me. They didn't attack me after I did it, so I figured it worked. Aumlet sounds like this was an optional thing. What did I miss?

P.S. I was a bit skeptical about the thing where I had to put goat dung on my cheeks and sing "Green Acres," though. I'm not THAT gullible.

I think the ones at Cari's are native Southern Fire Ants: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/TOOLS/ANTKEY/southernfire.html as opposed to the imported variety, which are much more aggressive: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7487.html Just a guess based on behavior, I didn't study the things up close.

Or I guess it could have been a harvester ant, those sting too. Hrm. Now I won't rest until I identify the ants on your land, Cari!

We actually have the southern fire ants, harvester ants (which I am allergic too) AND little black ants.... we have a lot of different kinds of ants here!

Hey guys, I have a Light Sussex that went broody yesterday, but her eggs are not fertile, and all I breed are Seramas and OEGBs, which are too small for her size. Does anyone in the North County area have a few fertile eggs I could buy? Maybe 4-6? I'm not too particular about breed.

PM me if you do, thanks.
