I currently have 4 big coops, with lots of chickens in each one, but which will not be going with us. One will be taken down into materials.

I'm looking for ideas for small individual coops for breeding pens to separate all the chickens out.

I am working with dog kennel panels so my foot prints are set up for six foot increments. But you could do your own out of any framed up panel either wood framed or pipe framed. Sounds like you need to keep them portable so you dont loose all the work and effort with the next move.

I use 6 x 12 foot print for a breed coop for 15 +- chickens 6x6 for up to eight. Then I have had some modular Plywood panels cut that are two feet by six feet in lenght. Out of one sheet of plywood I get one panel that is two by four and two panels that are two by six. NO WASTE. My intention is to fasten eye bolts in the corners. This will allow the panels to be hung on the wire where ever you need shelter. They can be fastened by clips or just wired into place. With the chainlink perches can be made by using two by threes across the six foot span. The idea for me is to have these ready for bad weather and form huddle shelters over the main roost. And then use poop hammocks for catching the poo. That way underneath the poop hammock you can set the nest boxes on their own legs.

So two panels for top and back one short panel for the front leaving a 2 foot opening for access Poop hammock hung underneath and a walk way up to the poop hammock That gives them the space to hop up to the roost. It all protects them from the wind. Oh and block off the ends with leftover wood. I put tarps over the top of the whole kennel for sun and rain protection.

Okay - UNCLE! Will you sell me some? (And will you please choose all pullets? You did great last time...

) Maybe five? What else are you hatching? (Ignore that. Don't tell me!)

Cari - I know it's not a trade, but Economizers/Hurricane Fence in Ramona has an amazing selection of new & used fencing supplies. Every time we've done another chain link project here, that's where we've gone. They will deal a bit!

Seeing this reference to dog kennel panels has reinspired me.

I saw a dog kennel at Lowe's out of nice painted welded wire.

It also has the 6 by 10 foot footprint that is modifiable.

My only concern is that it isn't really sealed tight.

Should I be worried about mice getting in and stealing food?

Or, should I embrace the fact that I would have no labor/pain/emotional issues setting it up instead of trying to build something myself?

Please advise.

Michael

LOL.... Those are nice kennels. Yep micies can get in. Even if you had the whole thing done in hardware cloth. The mice burrow under.

Do the other 3 coops have to stay ?

How many will the small individual coops have to hold ?

The Livery in Ramona on Main St. carries gently used dog kennels. Sometimes you'll find the really heavy duty welded wire with a top. Worth checking out.
No matter which prefab pen you go with you'll need to put smaller wire over the existing wire, at least the bottom 3 ft. If you don't want rats and wild birds entering you could cover
it all. It's almost impossible to keep mice out, but the 1/2 in. wire is the way to go, not chicken wire (much cheaper, but you'll pay in lost feed in the long run).

Ah, my friend, the last question is one only you can answer.
