San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Awww, poor Beaker. I feel guilty now because he started having problems when you brought home the girls. He's a really pretty drake. I think he would be happy with anyone who has Muscovy hens.
How are the girls, by the way? I still think of all three of them, especially the hurt one that Knocked Kneed Hen picked up. Btw, I was up in Julian last weekend.
Oops, I edited it because Knock Kneed Hen was the one who picked the injured girl up, sorry!
Don't feel guilty. We were already having issues with him before and I was hoping the girls would be a help. The girls are doing great, btw. They flock with my boys all the time and they are a very happy foursome.

So, despite the fact that I've never been interested in a pet rabbit, it looks like Cinna (Bun) is joining our family. This little bunny has zero fear of people and has even charmed my husband, who came up with the name. We put a small A-frame hutch inside the chicken run for the bunny. That way the dogs can't get to it and bother it. Our Boss Lady hen was hysterical when she first saw the little rabbit - bawk bawk bagock! bawk bawk bagock! She thought this new creature was pretty sketchy. She's gotten used to it, but still comes by and gives it the eye, as if to make sure it doesn't suddenly decide to pull something funny. The bunny is totally not bothered by the chickens, the dogs, the cats, and active children. The dogs are still really interested, but my Ridgeback isn't doing the lock-on I.am.going.to.eat.you thing anymore.

I never wanted a rabbit! I caught a domestic bunny at a park once before, and spent 2 hours getting ticks off the poor thing. I happily found it a home. This bunny, though .... it's like it is supposed to be here. Go figure. It's getting nuts here, though not by BYC standards!

3 cats
2 dogs
5 adult hens (One found a new home this weekend)
3 pullets, 1 cockerel (we cover a cage with a blanket at night, and he isn't crowing during the day. As long as this continues, he can stay)
11 BCM eggs under two broodies
1 bunbun

I think my neighbors would faint.

Speaking of which, 2 of my pullets are pretty interesting. One is a frizzled Polish/Silkie cross and dramatic looking. Another seems to be a full Silkie but doesn't have the Silkie feather structure. If there is anyone excited about breeding frizzles and such, I'd be willing to part with them. Otherwise I'm happy to keep them. They have a place here, the silly looking things.

Well... I had saved up 16 eggs from my lovely new Blue Copper and Splash Copper Marans hens. I was waiting on my Blue Isbar eggs to show up, and then I was cranking up the incubator to happiness! Alex (my four year old) had other plans. Last night he found the egg turner and dropped the eggs one by one on to the tile floor. (Can you believe most of the yolks didn't break?) I salvaged six of them, and moved the turner way up high on top of the dryer. (It is higher than usual as it sits on a drawer riser.) This morning Alex found the cord and dropped four more eggs, so now I'm down to TWO. Two sad little eggs. I really don't think they're going to be fertile any longer, as they aren't with a rooster now. Sigh.

Plan B is to wait for my Blue Copper or Black Copper Cockerel to grow up a bit more and try again. Bummer.

Oh Dana,
So sorry to hear this. Hopefully the Isbars will come soon and you can get those going.

How are you feeling from your spill?
