San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hello and welcome SDSA from North County! Totally new here also and looking forward to the next meetup as well.

from Julian!
No meet up planned as of yet. Our last was just a month ago so maybe in another month or so is my guess. Anyone can plan one, just need to pick a place (make sure you acquire any permits needed) and time, then put the word out. There's one planned for the high desert people in Palmdale, too far for me though.

Got some pics of my babies today. The Ducks are three months old and the Turkeys are two.

For those that got to see them when they were babies, look how big they are already!

When is the July meet up scheduled for? My family and I would love to come!

:frow Kari Ann Farms , Welcome to the San Diego Thread! There is no meet up scheduled in San Diego for the month of July...at least not yet. Keep checking back though. You never know when one is going to come up. If you're looking for something in particular just post here and someone will respond. Likewise, if you're looking to sell, trade or re-home something you can post here as well.

You'll also find this thread to be great chicken therapy. Where else can you go and talk about your chickens cute antics and strange looking poops?

In 2 days I should have some Black Copper Marans hatching under my broodies ... Squee! I think I have 11 eggs (maybe 10?) and when I candled after a week and a half they were all going strong. The eggs are so dark I haven't bothered since, but if all goes well we'll have quite a few babies.

My plan is to keep one or two, as my dark eggs layers, and sell the rest on Craigslist. Any BYCer who wants one or two can have them for free.

Let me know!

I also have a couple of pullets that are really interesting. One is a silkie roo/Tolbunt polish hen cross that is frizzled. I'm happy keeping her, but if there was anyone looking for a goofy bird like that, I'm willing to let her go. The other was is supposedly a full black silkie, but the feathers aren't silkied.

I am 99% sure that she is a she, because Mr Peep the mini rooster is sure she's a she, and I take his word for it. I am 100% sure that she hatched from a silkie egg. If her dad wasn't silkie, she should be light skinned I believe? But she's dark, 5 toed, walnut combed. And female. According to the Love Machine.

It's true! Turkeys are SOOO amazing. I bought a couple last year from the feed store and absolutely fell in love with them. They are amazing! In fact, yesterday I let them all out to forage and my boyfriend and I were standing next to the garden watering when I heard the baby turkeys make their "alarm" call. They were only about 5 feet away from us and I didn't see or hear anything so I was like ?what? I edged a little closer and looked in the direction they were looking and there was a rattlesnake! in the rocks RIGHT NEXT TO US!!! I was like WHOA!!! OMG it was so close and it didn't even rattle or anything. But the good little watchers found it and alerted us! We chopped it's head off and I gave the turkeys extra treats for being such good babies.

I agree on both comments! Your birds are stunning and turkeys are wonderful pets. My Popcorn fellows me around all the time and every night I give him a hug and kiss when he goes into the coop. Sounds silly I know but I love my birds!

That is awesome!

MUST RESIST

I'm glad that turkeys are so sweet. I have to admit, their faces ... aren't the most beautiful to me.

LOL.... not a Snood lover eh.... What is cool is they can change its color depending on their mood. My Mr T would puff up and walk up to me kind of sideways.... I Named him Mr T because he had all this bling in hie feathers.... He was a firece defender of the flock too. I caught him beating something up in the coop one day and thought OMG it was a chicken.... I pulled him off and it was a Raven. It was on its back and its eyes was shut. Not killed just playing possum.
