San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Gorgeous KKH! So makes me want more fuzzies!

Does anyone know if I can find chicken water nipples locally? And by locally I mean anywhere in San Diego County? I am only finding them online and the shipping is more than the nipples.

I never, ever thought I would be asking for advice about chicken nipples. Oy.

Ask your feed store to order them for you - most feed stores order from catalogs fairly often and it doesn't add much to thier shipping total so often you will get them close to cost without much shipping charges if any.

Hi,

Does anyone have a small but good incubator I could borrow to hatch four eggs? I have a flock of 4+1 and would like to "foster" a few chicks for friends who are getting their own small flocks. I have never hatched eggs before and would love to have this experience. The hatched chicks would go to friends. I was going to buy a Brinsea incubator but since this may be a one-time deal I thought I would ask first if anyone has a small incubator they are not using that I could borrow. Thanks.

Oh, I am an idiot, I forgot to say that I checked at Hawthorne and they didn't have any.

They have ones for pigs apparently though. You know, just in case I decided to branch out.

escondido feed can and is usually quite willing to order anything you want - or you can try the new feed store in san marcos 1450 descanso ave - north co feed & supplu i think its called - they are really nice, cheaper than hawthornes for a lot of stuff and willing to order things

Went to get feed yesterday and got charged tax (as usual) by the checker, when her boss told her to take the tax off , as chicken feed sales are tax exempt, as long as feed is the only thing that is being purchased on the receipt. That was good news to me.

Then I came across this this morning on the Hay Guy's site:

State of California
BOARD OF EQUALIZATION
SALES AND USE TAX REGULATIONS

Regulation 1587. ANIMAL LIFE, FEED, DRUGS AND MEDICINES.
Reference: Sections 6018.1, 6358, and 6358.4, Revenue and Taxation Code.
(a) ANIMAL LIFE. Tax does not apply to sales of any form of animal life of a kind the products of which ordinarily constitute food for human consumption (food animals), as for example, cattle, sheep, swine, baby chicks, hatching eggs, fish, and bees. Operative January 1, 1993, food animals include ostriches. Operative January 1, 1996, food animals include emus. Operative January 1, 2000, the term “food animals” includes any form of animal life classified by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, by regulation, as livestock or poultry intended for human consumption under sections 18848 and 25408 of the California Food and Agricultural Code. Tax shall not apply to sales of such newly defined food animals on or after the date the related California Food and Agricultural regulation is effective. The term “food animals” does not include any forms of animal life which are commonly kept as pets or companions, the sale of which for food is prohibited by Penal Code section 598b, nor does it include any horse, the sale of which for human consumption is prohibited by Penal Code section 598c. For example, cats, dogs, horses, mink, and canaries are not food animals.
(b) EXEMPTION CERTIFICATES.
(1) FEED. Sellers of feed should secure feed exemption certificates with respect to sales of feed of a kind customarily used both to feed food animals and to feed non-food animals which is purchased for food animals, and with respect to sales of all feed which is purchased for non-food animals being held for sale in the regular course of business.
(2) Sellers of feed need not secure feed exemption certificates with respect to sales of feed of a kind ordinarily used only in the production of meat, dairy or poultry products for human consumption or with respect to sales in small units (two standard sacks of grain or less and/or four bales of hay or less) of feed of a kind customarily used either For food production or other purposes (feeding work stock), or with respect to sales of feed that is specifically labeled by the manufacturer for food animals. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, it will be presumed that all such feed are to be used in producing meat, dairy or poultry products for human consumption.

Phage its been that way a very long time. And if you buy alfalfa and tell em its for goats or cows they dont charge tax for that either. Most registers have a taxable key so you can mix purchases. There should not be tax on food at the grocery store but since the ""snack Tax" came about I can never tell what is or isnt taxed. Used to be Newspapers and Periodicals were not taxed either but I will be danged if I know when that one changed.

ON a chicken Note.... I got my first egg from my wellies.

Its soo pretty. And big too as big as my Auracana's eggs who has been laying now for about three months. Oh and She is looking like she wants to go broody. I was sitting there waiting for their buckets to fill and watching her she went into her nest and very carefully sat down on five eggs and turned a little and arranged and worked her chest feathers to cover them all then snuggled down. Not pancake style but down. When she hopped up for a treat there was a sixth egg in there. No Eggsong..... what so ever. Hot Stuff (her roo) did it for her.....
