San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

i had hubby build a box from wood on a pallet.keeps it contained well.you could put a tarp over it if you want.wooks good for us.

Hi everyone! How do ya'll store your straw hay (if you use it). I've recently switched to using straw hay for the floor of my coop and pine shavings for the nest boxes. Pine shavings come in a bag, so no worries there. However, hay does not. It's just all tied up. I currently have the bale in my garage, but I'm wondering if maybe I should buy several rubbermaid storage containers and stuff the hay in there as I think it's gonna take me a few months to get through an entire bale.

Thanks!

I'm new to the site, and new to chickens. I live in Rancho Penasquitos and just got my first 4 chicks. I'm curious about how the recent ordinance has affected the number of San Diegans starting to keep chickens. Does anyone know? Also, where are your favorite local resources/feed stores? There don't seem to be many/any in town.

Also... I"m curious to know how many people are violating their HOA/CCR (if you're comfortable saying) and if you're experiencing any challenges from the neighbors or community.

I believe I may be in violation of my HOA, not 100% sure though cuz they keep changing the CC&Rs and I don't have the latest and greatest. As far as I know one of my neighbors is totally cool and even takes eggs when I have too many. The other neighbors I have a hard time ever catching to talk to, but they haven't complained. I'm sure my chickens are quiet compared to the Siberian Husky I used to have howling all hours of the day and there isn't any smell because I religiously clean up my yard weekly if not more often when daylight permits.

I got to Southwest Feed, Grain & Hay off Monument Rd down south. That may be a bit far for RP. I think there may be a few somewhere closer to you or in La Mesa or Santee.

The recent ordinance? Was there another one after the one making it legal? I live in Mira Mesa and we got chickens after the law change in March(May?). I always get my chicken related items from Kahoots in Ramona or Hawthorne in Escondido. Welcome to the chicken crazy! :)

nearest to Rancho Penasquitos is probably one of these. Hawthorn is probably the most comprehensive Marys can be pricy but I found their feed wasnt too bad. Also check at your local WalMart Some of them carry feed for livestock. The one in Lakeside does. The way i found the information for the ones below is go to Google maps key in the words

feed store near Rancho Penasquitos, San Diego, CA and these and more will pop up. Carters hay and grain will be a full service feed store like Hawthorn... I know her personally she has another store in Lakeside... very knowledgeable people.
