San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hello everyone. I don't live in San Diego actually but I'm in Temecula which is basically part of North county right? Plus I go into San Diego many times per week. I just wanted to jump on board and join a group of people who is as obsessed about chickens as I am. How often do you all meet up?

The flapping around after decapitation is no fun, and is probably the worst part... I know *why* it's happening, but it sure doesn't ease the ick factor, either. When you get down to the core of it, it's just a nasty job that needs to be done.

Charlotte, I'm with Allison - give that poor Silkie some eggs! I'll donate some to her cause!

I will love to but she is on the roost lol. I tried to put her in the nesting box but she goes back to the roost. There is no way I can give her any eggs unless they are square

Hi everyone! I'm in N Escondido (county unincorp actually)...building our coop now and while I don't have any babies yet I am developing a deep obsession with Marans and can't wait until we have our own flock! I'd love to join a meet-up after we actually have chickens.......

dfdesigns: I just emailed you about your fertile eggies!

Deb is right - you should come NOW! I had no chickens when I went to my first meet-up, and now I have more than a few...

thanks ladies :) I just might! U are saying the 9th of Feb, correct? I have my hands full with various impending things (don't we all) but just might be able to stop by...I remember joining a twins mommy group when I was preggo with my boys and I showed up still preggers and they all had kids there...they thought I was insane...Now u know why I am hesitant about being a voyeur!

Hi to all the new folks!

I thought this might be helpful to someone, it would make a great coop I think, and it is free.

You know I used to ask myself that.... Till I spoke with a gal who raised goats for meat and for sale. All bottle raised all had names and play toys.

She did all her own processing. She said the way she does her goats is she sits with them she does the cut then she talks and pets them while they pass. She didnt want anyone else to do it because it would be too traumatic for the goats. Her way of controlling their last moments.

Chickens have far less complicated thought processes. Have you ever noticed how once you grab them by the feet and hang them upside down they just relax.

For instance I have a Mumbling roo.... hes too funney. Hes a black Silkey named Truffle and while he walks he talks kind of a stecatto mumbling. Hes a scrapper too got into the Wellie pen and went after a Wellie roo . Hes half the size of the Wellie.... I tried to break it up but could only get hold of one foot on the Silky. I reached down and got the other foot and lifted him up.... LOL Chicken feet always surprise me at how soft and warm they are. He immediately stopped mumbling and dangled his wings.... like OK I give up... and went limp. I carried him this way till I could get the propper doors shut and opened then gently layed him down in his own coop. He layed there a moment generally assessing if he was dead or not then Hopped up and started mumbling and walking again.

great post ! funny little story ! The You Tube video with the woman who wears the pink scarf does the same with chickens. First she dons a rubber apron and rubber boots. Holds the birds upside down and taps the jugular while she talks to them for a few minutes and quickly cuts with a very sharp knife AB holds them until still, dead and bled out.

I think that they are still when hung upside down to fool you. If some one tried to kill me I would pretend I was dead also.
